How many of us still remember when that last sweet old word "good bye" was spoken, the engine whistled, the train moved off amid smiles and tears, hopes and iears, with banners waving, handkerchiefs flying, mu8i playing, leaving thou sands of sad and weeping hearts. We bade them "God speed," many of them never to return. We cannot obliterate these memories. For thir ty years now the ladies of North Carolina have made it a labor of love. By our own efforts we have raised thousands and thousands of dollars, much of it having been sent to other states to perpetuate the deeds of North Carolinians, while the state has never appropriated $1 fo erect a monument on her own soil Know ing this and feeling as alas, so many of us do, that with the fall of the Confederacy our hearts were crushed and all of our hopes blighted, we have organ'zed this association. We do not ask the et tte to do the work, but only lend the ladies a helping hand. Let us erect a monument that will ever serve as a reminder to our children.
