' - hV I If I i-m IB II II : !H VOL. XXVIII. - RALEIGH, MONDAY, MARCH 6. 1893. NO. 112 CITY IN BlUPF. Farewell to the law makers The spring poet has not so far, pat la his appearance There will be a meeting of the Res- ens Fire Company tonight. Prompt attendance desired. The farmers are anxiously waiting for good weather. They are much behind in their work. Mr Jno. 0 George president of the Raleigh 6treet Railway Company, is . In the city. Mrs. 0. H. Beine continues quite ill. It is a but simple act of jnetice toeay, that Senator Olive has made a most efficient representative of our county. On all occasions he has acted with dignity and endeared himself to his colleagues by his zeal and or banity. Speaker Overman is the recipient of compliments on all sides for the splendid manner in which die charged his duties As a presiding officer he has had but few equals in North Carolina, and no superior. He is what might be termed a real "hustler" e t the business. It is a fact, beyond all dispute that Water R Newsom, the popular grocer, 214 South Wilmington street, is carrying one of th best stocks to be found, not only in Raleigh but in North Oaro'ina, embracing evtrv ' thing that is usually found in a first class fancy end heavy goods groceiy. There is no place where the honce wife can fill the larder to better ad vantage. 4 Walter' knows just how to suit the tastes of the public. The time for brushing up the house, generally, is about at bauo, and, wit h it, comes a re arrangement of luruf ture for the spring and summer months There i necessarily jnui-h to renovate; and new s its of f urni ture are needed in many instances. For instance, suuimtr rocking chairs, Settees, &c The little ones are to be looked after also, and baby carriages suitable for pleasant weather must be secured. Now these necessary sup plies for the household can be had on the most moderate terms at the cele brated emporium of Thomas & Max well, Exchange Place, south side of market. Here everything that the fancy can. suggest in the frrninve line can be found. There is no -v -y to find out the merits of the superb stock but to call and inspect it New Home sewing machine ueerfle and oil on hand. Ask for them. We briefl , aluled, in our issue of Saturday, to the New Era hydraulic e'othes washer offered for sale by Mr. L li Wyatt, of this city. There never has been in the history of patents in this country one of more use to the wrr'd generally than this, and it is destined to work a compleie revolution in the matter of saving labor. The claims of its invention are good in all respects. We enumer ate them as fo'los-s: It claims to wash all varieties of goods, from the finest lace to the coarsest carpets, perfectly clean, with out rubbing or boiling, without the use of chemicals or any destructive process or preparations, asking only for good soap and water. It claims to do f tuily washings in one fourth of the time required by any other process and without any objectionable features. It claims to have a wsher that is simtvle iu construction and easily un derstood, that is durable, without any arts to get out of order or re pair It claims that when you have seen iid '-nderstood its operation you wijl buy one, that you will like it and re commend it as a perfect success, and the onlv washer you ever saw that will take the place of the rub board. he w Ruber is guaranteed to Co all (h it is clam ed for it, if used accord iug to directions It will do any family washing fur five years without g- tting out of ordr or repair. AlTecilng Scene. Last Sitarday night just before the close of the session of the Senate, Mr. Merritt, Senator from Person arose and walked down the isle to the front of the President's desk. Pausing a moment, amid the most profound silence, he addressed Lieut, Governor Doughtou in a most beau tiful and touching manner. He call ed attention to the faithful manner in which the presiding officer had discharged his duties, and ended with the presentation of a splendid gold headed eane To these remarks Lieut. Governor Doughton respond ded in a feeling manner, which cans ed the tears to flw from several eyes. At the conclusion of this ceremony Senator Pou arose, and iu a beauti. ful speech presented the Lieut. Gov ernor with a nice silver butter dish, which was presented in a happy style. Senators Means then presented a gold headed cane to Senator King followed by Senator Posey, who, in an eloquent manner, presented chief clerk Burkhead a gold headed cane and a Meershaum pipe. Mr. Burkhead responded in a feeling speech. It was an affecting scene and made a deep impression on all present. Litchford Encampment No. 26 will meet tonight at 7:30 o'clock.
