- - i j t ! 4 t t WW? VOL. XXIX. RALEIGH, TUESDAY, APRIL 25. NO. 2 Pans 1 .1 .4 CITY IN BRIEF. Solicitor Pa is In tbe city. April showers bow la order. Roses beginning to pat forth. The king of France well, we won t say it. - Ex-Attorney General Davidson is in the city. Judge Sohenok, of Greensboro, is in the city. Now is the time for "Just like I told yoa." We had the pleasure of seeing Hon W R Cox in the city today. A big flouring mill is the next in dustry booked for Durham. The total cost of the Boston bridge disaster to the R & D Railroad was $100,000. Mr J 8 Wynne and daughter, Mies Lena, have returned to the city from northern cities. Mr O H Belvin and daughter, Miss Bessie, returned yesterday from a pleasure trip to the northern cities. Mr A A Thompson went to New Berne today to deliver an address be fore the North Carollca p'ess associ ation. It seems to be settled beyond a rea sonable doubt that Mr 'Buck' Black well will be the new postmaster at Durham. Tbe R&D Railroad Is making low rates to the Southern Baptist con vention which meets in Nashville, Tenn, next May. The telephone by which the resi dence of Dr A J BuTaloe can be reached, dav or night, is number 23, corner of Morgan and West streets. An exchange facetiously remark that if the State Guard can't manage matters at James city, then it might be well to ca'l on the prtss associa' tlon. As the prospects are now most ex cellent for a fine Trult crop, somebody will be regretting that they have not started a canning factory in this vi cinity. We are much pleased to hear that there will be no removal of the work shops of the R & G Railroad, but that they will be operated in this city as heretofore. The play soil on the side alk on the north side of EUrgett between Wilmington and Blount streets, is anything but pleasant on rainy davs. A coating of gravel wt uld help uit. It is rumored that, Rev Junius Hor ner, of the Horner ehool at. Oiford, will succeed Prof Eben Alexander in the faculty of the university of North Carolina. The selection would be a most admirable one in all respects. - Our venerable friend, Mr W O Up church, told us today that he did not remember to have seen such a pro tracted cool spell in April. He is nearly 80 years old and been a resi dent of Raleigh a great many years New cotton factories are in sight at Raleigh, Char'otte, Concord, Rook ingham and Haw River. North Car olina is fast losing its name as an ag rioultural state and is entering the ranks of a great manufacturing com monwealth. Many wild rumors may be expected as to the real condition of affairs at James City. Cur Governor is pres ent and we may rest assured that no steps will be taken without due con sideration. He will however, be firm and insist that the majesty of the law must be vindicated. The ladies of the Rescue circle will give a tea at the mission rooms this afternoon from 5 to 11 o'clock. No admission fee but a dainty tea served for a small remuneration. The ob ject is a most worthy one, and the liberal patronpge of the community will be most gratefully appreciated. Those who are not able to attend will be most cheerfully served if they send orders to the rooms between the hoars above named. Variety of creams on hand. All Quiet. ! There has been no material change in the status of affairs at Jaies City ; so t r Ms nn be ascertained, at this writing. It is eonflJeutly expected i that there will be a peaceful solution ' of the matter Them have been no reports of unusual disturbance on the part of the ngroen, ao.1 it is m.re than probable that the civil author!- ' ties can managV to cirry out tbe mandates of the court The pres- ' ence of the military has however had a most salutary rfirect. THK LATEST. This afternoon a dispatch was re ceived from Mnj Harrell, now at James Oity, sUting hat Gov Carr had a consultation with representa fives of tbe colored tenants at that place nt which the governor gave them until 8 o'clock this afternoon to decide what course they wonld pur sue. This being tbe case, further in telligence will be looked for with much intetest. The folio iug dispatch has also ben received: Situation unchanged. Committee of last resort to report at 4 o'clock, and this will determine final action. Capt. J. IS. Pogue. Notwithstanding the announce mpnt that h wasDOt a candidate for Alderman this gentleman received uinHteen votes at the primary meet iug of the Third Ward last night. Capt. Pogua had, some time since announced his purpose not to be a candidate tor re-election, as h's pri vate business was of such a character as to demand his undhided atten tion. The votes given him last night, therefore, were entirely of a gratuit ous character, which under the cir cumstances were a just tribute to his past services We can state without ehaige of invidious distinction, that he has made a most excellent repre siitative of the city's interest, and upon all opportune occasions was one of the advance guard in every move raent for the material progress of Raleigh. We hope that at no distant day it may be convenient for Capt. Pogue to enter again the public service in some useful capacity. Mad Dog. . In yiew of the fact that there is some excitement in the country about mad dogs, we give the law npon the subject, as follows: 'When the owner of any dog shall know, or have go-d reason to believe that his dog, or any dog belonging to any person under his control has been bitten by a mad dog, and shall ! neglect or refuse irame liately to kill the same, he shall forfeit and pay the sum of $ 0 to him who will sue there ' for; and the offeud6rsh8.il be liable to pay all damages which mav be sus tained by any one, in his roperty'or person, by the bite of any dog be longing as aforesaid, and shall be1 guilty of a misdemeanor and fined , not more than $'0, or imprisoned not ' more than 80 davs." Wake Superior Court. The following cases were disposed of today: Narcissa Loyd vs William Loyd; judgment non suit. State ex rel Jane Price vs Edmund Morgan; continued. R R "Sates vs the N O Plow Co judgment for plaintiff. In re caveat of probate of will of Barbee Leister; continued. . J B Blake vs Ralph Peace; on trial. At Work.
