News is given of the death of Col W H Thomas, father in law of Asso ciate Justice Avery, of the Supreme Court. Col Thomas was for years the chief of the eastern b nd of Cher kees in North Carolina, and raised a " legion" of those Indians for the Confederate service. Col. Thomas was 64 years of age and was a man of much information and had held sev eral prominent public positions He died in the Western Hospital at Mor ganton.
