It Is an occaaiou that yoa cannot afford to miss. June 24th. "Ike Batbee" one of the old family hands brought to the city yesterday a potato of the early peabody variety (B&tataa ICovolvnlus Rubicund ae) Jane 83d. This is as early as any potato Wake county has ever produced. 'Twas three inches in diameter and nearly six in inches length. The Teachers Assembly. A gentleman from Morehead says that the crowd is still increasing and the attendance at the Teachers As semble will be the largest for years. Distinguished personages are present from all parts of this State, as well as from other portions of the Union. The oratorical discussion between young men from the different col leges, last night was an occasion of nnnsual Interest. The speech of Gov. Carr was one of great informa tion and elicited the highest praise. Died. Yesterday afternoon a gentleman named Mr Williams (Wilhelm), .a Prussian by birth, died at his room ic this city. For some time he has been tn the employ of Maj R 8 Tuck er in the capacity of gardener and horticulturist and was an excellent gentleman. He was about 65 years old and of the Jewish persuasion. The f uneial will take place tomor row morning at 9 o'clock at the rooms of Mr J W Brown, undertaker, and will be conducted in accordance with the Hebrew rltoal. One of the most distressing features of Mr Williams' death is that he was to have been married to a most esti msb'e Indy of this cUy next month. - Officers Elected. The following are the officers chosen by the Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythias for the ensuing year: E A Ebert Winston, Grand Chan cellor. O E Hol'on Greensboro, Grand Vice Chancellor. P R L-jw--Grand Prelate. W W Wilson Raleigh. Grand Mas ter. S B Bundy Monroe, Grand Inter Guard. H T Hudson Shelby, Grand Outer j Guard. Jno. L Dudley Grand K of R and 8. Jno. Ward Grand M of Ex. Sup Rep W 8 Uooke, Fayette- vill, in place of W T Hollowell, Goldsboro. A Sad Case. A special received last night by the New and Observer conveys the sad intelligence of the death of Charles H Conrad, a prominent banker and tobacconist of Danville, Va. The particulars of the case are of the most distressing character It seems that at about IS o'clock midnight, last. Thursday, Mr Conrad boarded a train of the R&D Railroad for Richmond ' He secured a berth in a sleeper Yes terday morning bis mangled bod was found on the side of the track; near Amelia courthouse, Va. He had not taken off his clothing which evi dently shows that he had not occu pied his berth. Whether he acci dentally fell off the train or was thrown off is not known. The whole. Affair is a mystery. Mr Conrad was a most estimable gentleman and widely known. About two years since he married Miss Eathryn Eeogh, daughter of Col , Thos B Eeogh, of Greensboro, a most ; estimable lady. We deeply sympa thize with all ffllctf d by the terrible bereavement v See notice of auction sale of city Be on Hand. Next Toesday morning at 7 o'clock at the Uaton Depot, and go on the excursion to AsheYllle. Best chance of the season. Only $3 CO the round trip. . Our Bouare. It is much to be regretted that the funds at the disposal of Maj Roberts, keeper of the capitol and grounds are not adequate to out the place in such shape an it should be. There is no prettier square anywhere than ours, and a liberal amount should be al lowed V.y the legislature for its adorn' ment. The Weather. For North Carolina: Fair, follow ed on Sunday by increasing cloudU ness and probably showers in west. Warmer Sunday a m. Local forecast for Raleigh and vi cinity On Sunday: Fair, slightly warmer. Local data for 24 hours ending at a m. today: Maximum temperature, 80 mini mum temperature 62; rainfall 0.0. A man was up before the mayor of Greensboro a few days since who said he had not done a lick of work for five years He is a hale, hearty fel low, and requires hie children to work in a cotton factory to support him. Good specimen for a work house. The tax listers at the court bouse will s' 111 list your polls and property if you call. There are many delin quents and the consequence will be trouble if it is not attended to. Call and list at once. Arrangements are on foot already for the establishment of a new na tional bank at Wilmington. There is now only one bank in the city which is hardly enough for a place of thatsize. A Bkating Rink would add much to the attraction of Brookside Park. Perhaps the electric railway compa ny might manage to fix up one. It would no doubt pay them to do so. We notice that the trees in Moore square have grown much the past year or so This could be made a most beautiful resort with but little cost.
