Several of our merchants are fixing
to go north for goods early next

We hear that Mr Geo. H Snow, who
has been very sick in New York, is
improving.
Watermelons and cantaloupes are
now coming in freely and prices
dropping.
It is said that the intense heat is
having a good effect in killing insects
on the cotton.
The northbound fast train on the
Seaboard Air Line was an hour or so
late this morning.
The sanitary officers are on their
rounds. See that your premises are
in proper order.
The Wilmingto lawyers who have
been in attendance here on the Bank
of New Hanover case, returned home
today.
A large picnic will be given Tat
Moresville, July 38.h, for the benefit
of the orphans home at Barium
Springs.
We are glad to learn tiaf the Board
of Public Charities are preparing de
signs for county homes at the request
of the commissioners of several coun
ties.
A farmer told us today that under
the heat of the past week or so the
cotton crop is making much progress
He says it is "catching up" wonder
fully. By all means the Governors Guard
should have their full compliment.
It would be a shame if "our boys'
should lose their appropriation. Le
all go who possibly can.
Attention is directed to the adver
tisement of the Nbrris Dry Goods

state, says that owing to an unprece
dented financial depression in Wil
mington it is impossible to raise the
necessary funds; therefore, the tour
lament is abandoned.
We notice that at the recent meet
ingot our Chamber of Commerce. a
committee was appointed to prepare
and submit at a subsequent meeting
views relative to the stringency of
the times. This is an important
matter, but the gentlemen named on
the committee are among our best in
formed citizens, and we look for not
only a recount of the condition of
things but t 'jp suggf stion of some
plan of relief . This plan can be sent
to other cities, and as in a multitude
of counsel there is wisdom, much
good may result.
A Good Move.
It is a source of much gratification
that the Teachers' Assembly urged
the establishment of a state reforms
tory for youthful criminals. Now let
the legislature at its next session
make a liberal appropriation for the
purpose.
Hustained.
We were informed by Judge Whit
aker this morning that he had bus
tained the appointment of Junius Da
vis,' as receiver of the Bank of New
Hanover and that of Mr Leak as re
celver of the Bank of Wadesboro.
A Noted Plant.
The piper mills at the Falls of
Neuse will be oparated by Messrs J
N Holdiug and Tyndale Cobb, they
having leased them for five years.
These mills are among the most noted
in the country, and under the man
agement of these gentlemen will more
than attain their old time reputa
tlon.
A Crash.
During the storm this afternoon
the smoke stacks at the shops of
Messrs Ellington & Royster were
blown down. It was a general smash
up, damaging the building to some
extent, but fortunately to one was
hurt. The crash was a terrible one,
causing much excitement in the vi
cinity. The Weather.

Telephone Bates.
The State Railwav Commission has
settled the telephone rates in the
state. The tariff of annual rentals is:
Business telephones, $60 within
city litnits; three parties in same cir
cuit, $40; residences, $10; where there
is telephone at place of business,
three parties on same circuit, $30, $6
to be added where there is no busi
ness telephone. Each fourth of a
mile of wire for extra distances, $5;
annual charge for use of toll line, 5
cents each five minutes in city limits;
15 cents for 10 miles; 5 ceots for 25
miles. These rates vie about the
eame as the old ones save on circuits,
! the latter being much cheaper.
