" Jst HargHctt street is literally
Llocked up with carts containing
:;kii for sale. It is selling cheap and
now is the time to purchase for the
winter.
Squirrels are said to be unusually
plentiful in some portions of the coun
ty. An old farmer today said they
- run around like rats in his neighbor
hood.
A big fight is expected on the con
firm" tion of Collector Ellas. Many
of the friends of that gentleman are
in Washington putting in some hard
licks.
Mr Samuel A Henszey, president of
the Egypt coal mines, was here yes
terday. It is understood that the
plant is to be pushed to its full
capacity.
We acknowledge the receipt of a
complimentary ticket to the Border
Exposition of the Garolinas to. be
held at Maxton October 25th to
88th 1893.
It is expected there will be a grad
ual Increase of ' ootU n receipis each
day. The movement of the crops is
fairly under way. The compress will
start to work soon.
There are too many scuppemong
hulls on the sidewalks for the safety
of the ordinary pedestrian. There
should be a strict ordinance against
' it, and it should be enforced.
It seems to as that the city of Ral
eigh might spend a few hundred dol
lars on Metropolitan hall to much
advantage. It is capable of being
made a first class hall in all respects
Congressman Bnno would add
much to his popularity if he would
get..iil through for a macadamized
road fron oar city limits to the Fed
eral ceaetery. It has long been
talkjil about.
Uncle Hiram took the town by
torai today. Everybody was mash

TherUisa genuine bustle among
our busMaess men that really looks
encouraging. Everybody seems bt(
and the merchants are fast arranging
their fall a;nd winter purchases. It
don't look ILkt there was anything
like a money 'panic about.
The state experiment station is pre
paring a bulletin o results of digest
ion in cattle, with special reference to
the value of forage foods and cotton
seed products. ' his is the result of
experience by experiments and will
be a valuable report. The station has
done more in showing the digestive
value of foods than that of any other
"lathe state.

The Monument.
The $10,000 appropriated by the
general assembly for the confederate
monument was not expected, of
course, as a finality. As we under..
stand it, this sum was a mere enter
ing wedge to start the enterprise and
it was expected that the patriotic
people of North Carolina would come
to the rescue and raise such an addl
tional sum as would ensure a further
appropriation by the state. Some of
the counties have done well, it is true,
but there are many others that have
taken no dee'ded steps in the matter.
We hope there will be a general stir
ring up in this matter so that the la
dies may be able to make a fair show
ing by the time the next legislature
assembles. The credit of the state
demands it.

Died.
A young man whose name was
Peyton Hargrove died last night
at the Agricultural and Mechan
ical college. This is the second
death at the institution in the past
day or so, but - in justice to all con
cerned we can state that both of
the young men cime here. flck. Mr
Hargrove lived in Tarboro and was
sick with the malarial fever prior to
con irg to Raleigh. Several members
of bis father's family are now down
with the disease. The immediate
cause of death, we har, was a con
gestive chill.
