f aneral of Dr. I. Burke Haywood.
Seldom, If ever, ban there been iaeh
demonstrations of sorrow m have
been shown on the part of all oar
people over the death of Dr E Barke
Haywood, and It culminated this
morning bv the largest and most im
pressive funeral evemeen in Raleigh.
It was announced that, the services
would take place from Christ church
at 11 o'clock, but before the arrival
of that hoar a law concourse of po
pie representing ad c'aeses and shades
of society winded their way to th
church filling it to the utmost oapac- '
lty. The solemn cortege arrived at j
the proper time accompanied by a I
large concourse int naa asemoiea
at the residence. Among the variom
attendants were delegations of Con
federate veterans, officers, teachers -and
pupils of the institution for the .
deaf and dumb and blind representa
tives from the A and M college. Peace
institnte, St Mary's, insane asylum
The Academy of Medicine was fully
represented by most of the physicians
of he city. The services in the church
were of the most impressive charao
ter, conducted by the rector, Rev Dr
M M Marshal..
The floral decorations were of tbe
highest order for beauty and design,
and every tribute of res eet of an ap
propriate kind was paid to the ' be
loved physician "
At the conclusion of the service.- at
the church the solemn piocession
wended its way to the cemetery. The
members of the Raleigh Academy of
Medicine acted as hono'rary pall
bearer.
The following colored friends of '
the lamented dead bore the ca ket:
Geo Bryant, Dave Thompson, MorrU
Watts, Frrtuk Debnam. Buck Wil
liams and Charles Card well
During tu funeral ceremonies the
most, soletnu gloom per' a fieri the en
tire city. It was confined to no clas,
eolor or creed, but our people all join
ed in the general sorrow Noevnt
In oar midst of a similar kind has
ever drawn forth more marks of gn
uine sympathy. AH felt thaf our
community had sustained a heavy
loss while each individual mourned
as if a dear friend "had crossed the
river."
We should not omit to mention that
the store, city an county officials
paid due homage by their presence
and ot herwise to the lamented dead.
For ourselves, we can only render
the poor homage of earnest sympa
thy for the afflicted family in the
loss of one who, in life was one of
our most devoted friends, and whose
memory we will cherish as a bright
oasis in the troubles and trials of life.
"Peace to his ashes "
