Anul Sanders, a negro, was shot and In stantly killed here yesterday by Mr. M. F. Owens, a merchant doing busi ness on the corner of Railroad and Main Btreets. From the. testimony gathered 'at the Inquest It was de veloped that Mr. Owens had had some difficulty with the negro over sugar bought by the daughter of the lat ter Thursday night and brought back by Sanders Friday morning. Mr. Owens refused to take the Bugur back. The negro left It In the store and went out. It is said that Mr. Owens threw the paokage at the ne gro," striking him on the head. The darkey asked him what he meant. Mr; Owens replied that he would do worse than that if he did not like it. The negro answered .that he would not come Outside and do it. He then walked' i' towards the corner. Mr. Owens followed and began firing. The negro turned the corner by the Commercial Club, Mr. Owens still following and shooting. Three shots took effect,' one in the back, near the neck, one below' the groin, and one in the small of the back. The negro fell and died almost immediately. Durham, N. C, Sept. 23. Mr. V. C. Matthews, a stu dent here, received the Bad intelli gence yesterday morning by tele gram that his brother was instantly killed at his father's cotton v.t Bradley's Store, N. C. He left at once to attend the funeral, which took place to-day. The deceased was Mack Matthews, son of Dr. Matthews, ex-treasurer of Harnett county. He was at work ;it the head block fell striking him on the head and causing instant death. Special Choir Music at Good Shep herd Church To-morrow.
