At the opening of the stock market today there was a sprinkling of gains amongst promi nent market leaders which showed ef forts at support of the market. There were free offerings at other quarters of the list, however, causing sharp declines. Great Northern preferred fell 2, Canadian Pacific. 1 3-4, Atlantic Const' Line, Hide & Leather preferred and Anaconda a point and Pennsyl vania, Hearting, Atchison and American Ice largo fractions. Virginia Iron sold at: a decline of 3 t-2, and Chicago Ter minal preferred at an advance of 2. Selling orders swept away the feebie resistance of the bulls, and prices dip ped sharply. Only a few of the prom inent stocks, however, sold below .the low level of yesterday. U. S. Steel and lieading established low records for the movement of 33 7-8 and 121 re spectively. After the forced selling orders had been disposed of the market rallied fcverinlilv. Home stocks sold above veslenlay's closing. St. Paul and Northern Pacific gaining a point and Anaconda 2. The market was on the down grade again at 11 o'clock. Pears covered some short lines in anticipation ctf the bank statement but that document proved disappointing in the small contractions in loans and prices sold off to the lowest of the day. I'ennsvlvania, New York Central. Heading, ' IT. S. Steel preferred and Amalgamated, Copper were prominent. New York Central dropped 2 3-4. Penn sylvania 1 7-S, Smelting 13.-4, Heading 1 fi-S. New York, June 30. The market has had an excessively dull forenoon, with a quick advance on a slight de mand to cover before the holidays. Tho disposition is to await the bu reau rather than to take any marked attitude, ofnd with the considerable short interest there is not much for sale on any urgent demand. Duncan today staled that the two suspected small pox patients at the hoarding house of Miss Sarah Davis at. Ileaufort had left. Roth patients have been discharged. The house has been thoroughly disinfected and fumigated and is now open to the public. There is considerable doubt in the minds of many as to the dis ease having been small pox at all. -Tno "number of visitors at. Four counties, so far as heard from, held republican conventions today and all elected delegates to the state convention who favor the elec tion of JudKO Spencer B. Adams as state chairman. A message from Dare county says the convention there intsructed for Adams. Duplin county's nine votes and Robeson county's nine votes were today in structed for Adams, says a report from those places. In Franklin county the convention at Lotiisbttrg elected Adams delegates. One of the pe culiar features connected with the last day of congress was the signing of the sundry civil bill. As it was passed It 'contained an Item, appropriating $3,000, 000 for the condemnation of a site for a building for the departments of state, justice and commerce and labor In Washington. This item was dropped out In conference, however, after It had been transformed to the omnibus pub lic buildhiK bill, and later it was dropped out of that bill also. The enrollment clerks failed to notice that tho appropriation had been elimi nated from the sundry civil bill, and Included it In the copy of the bill laid before tho president for his signature. Just as the president had concluded signing his name Senator Scott discov- eied the error. Senator Hale and Chairman Tawney of the house appropriation committee prepared a resolution repealing that feature of the bill making the $3,0tiil,000 appropriation, and this was passed by both bodies. CONVENTION OF STATE FARMERS. The annual session of the North Carolina Fa' mors' Convention begins at the Agricultural & Mechanical Col lege' the 10th of July tiid continues three days. Among the speakers will bo Governor Glenn, who will welcome the body, and Mr. Charles C. Moore, the ex-president of the North Carolina Cotton Association, will make the re sponse. The opening address will be by Commissioner of Agriculture Pat terson. There will be over thirty speak ers during the three days' session, among these being Secretary of State Grimes, Stare Veterinarian .'Butler, Slate Hortlculturalist Hume, State Poultrytnan Jeffrey, C, B. Harris, of the State Chemist section of the Agricul tural Department; H. C. Doekery, chairman of the executive committee of the State Cotton Association; T. B. Parker, secretary of that association; Dairy Kxpert U. H. Rawl, of the Unietd States Agricultural Department; Ed ward H. Webster, of the same depart ment; B. B.
