Crater. o a a CAME HERE FROM DANVILLE TO WED Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court Virtruvius Royster this morn ing, married a young couple from Danville, Va., in the office of the register of deeds. While the fact could not be learned It looked very much like a Gretna Green affair, al though both bride and groom were well of age, being 20 and 25 respec tively. They arrived from Danville this morning and departed as soon as possible after the ceremony for that place. The groom was Mr. Charley R. Slayton, and the bride Miss Ethel Foy Foust. White of Atlanta preached at both morning and even ing services. Mayor Johnson was able to be out this morning for the first time in sev eral days. He has been considerably under the weather. The Raleigh school committee will meet one day this week to set the time for the opening of the city schools. Superintendent E. P. Moses has re turned from Kinston, where he con ducted a teachers institute. A charter was issued this morning for the Grace Furniture Company of Salisbury with $100,000 capital, for the manufacture of furniture. The prin cipal stockholders are N. B. McCan less, N. W. Collett and others. -Engineer E. A. Muse of the Sea- Mr. S. S. Loikhart of Wadesboro, arrived Sunday. Mr. R. V. Simpson, Jr., has re turned to the city. Mr. K. G. IloSS of Durham spent the day in Raleigh, Mr. R. G. Murchison arrived in the city Sunday and is at the Yar borough. Mr. E. S. Simmons and son and Mr. A. AV. Styron of Washintgon, N. The chapel has hea extended twenty feet during the summer, and the roof over the organ chamber has been raised 8 feet. The organ is being installed by H. E .Hodgeson of Nor folk. ' Yesterday "morning immediately after Sunday school the congregation of th Christian church met and decided to extend a call as pastor of the church to Rev. Dr. J. P. Barrett, who is how located at Covington, Ohio. Dr. Barrett was formerly pastor of the church here, having accepted an- I other call about 15 years ago. He is I well remembered in the city, where he was very popular. He lived in Raleigh 8 or 10 years and published the Christian Sun bete. For two years he preached for the Chris tian church, and then went to Norfolk, where he built up a very large church, going from there to Covington, Ohio. He is considered one of the strongest men in the denomination. A telegram was sent him yesterday notifying him of the selection and ask ing him to respond at once, but so far answer has been received. It is earn estly hoped that he will accept the call. TIED HIS HANDS, DIED IN THE RIVER. (Special to The Evening Times.) Tarboro, N. C, Aug; 27. Early Sunday morning Jesse Hudson, a col ored man here, committed suicide by drowning himself in a small stream in east Tarboro. Hudson tied his hands securely behind him and also tied a brick around his neck. The coroner's jury rendered a ver dict that the negro deliberately com mitted suicide.
