(By the Associated Press.) New York, Dec. 11. Opening prices of stocks showeVl wide advances over last night, but the level was not fully up to the London parity. Elever. thousrfhd shares of Reading sold a. 152V4 and 151 compared with 150 1-4 last night. Canadian Pacific rose buoyantly 5 5-S. Virginia Iron advanced 2 and New York Central, Ontario St Western, Chesapeake & Ohio, Missouri Pacific and United States Steel a. point. Gains of substantial fractions were general throughout the list. There were a number of feverish fluctuations, especially in Reading, covering a point or more and bringing It at times within fractional distance of yesterday's closing. Other stocks went considerably higher before profit-taking made an Impression on prices. Top fig ures showed a gain of 2 6-8 in Wiscon sin Central prefered, 2 1-8 In Chesa peake & Ohio, 2 in New Haven and Sloss-Sheffleld Steel. 1 in Louisville & Nashville, 1 3-8 in Colorado Fuel and 1 In Union Pacific, Northern Pacific, To ledo, St. Louis & Western preferred, Wisconsin Central, Sugar and People's Qas. There were slight reactions. A rise of 2 in St. Paul held the market at 11 o'clock. St. Paul preferred fell 1M. The trading became quieter In the second hour, but the tone was still strong in spots. St. Paul rose 3 1-8 in all, crossing Union Pacific, the pre ferred advanced 3 1-4, Louisville & Nashville 2 5-8, rooklyn Transit, Pull man and Western Union 2 and Atlantic Coast Line, Great Northern Ore certifi cates and National isBcult 1. Peoria and Eastern dropped 2, Great North ern preferred 1 1-4 with a recovery and Colorado & Southern first prefered 1. The easier tone of the money market in response to the treasury's relief meas ure induced covering of shorts quite generally. Bonds were steady. Coincident buying on a largo 3cale of St. Paul and Union Pacific, impart ed further strength to other grain carriers, but the general list was not benefited to any noteworthy extent. Tremendous purchases of Reading were consummated within a range of' , one block of 8,800 shares changing- hands at 151. St. Paul climbed to 189, a rise of 5. Union Pacific, also improved ?, Anaconda and Buluth, Southshore & Atlantic, Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste Marie, Atchison, Southern Pacific and Rock Island preferred 1 to 1. Later quotations reflected the realizing in the market, and there was a general Sag from the bert prices, St. Paul reacting a point. The market was showing Improvement again at 2 o'clock. Belated advances in the Hill stocks and a further rise In Union Pacific to over last night caused some profit-hiking elsewhere. Reading lost all of its advance. Northern Pacific rose 15, Great North ern preferred 1, Duluth, South shore & Atlantic preferred 2, Brooklyn Transit 2, and American Ice 1. Cables made a fairly steady showing and the spot sales in the English market here gradually worked off under liqufdatlon with prices during the middle of the morning about 8519 points net lower. Liquidation by local longs and cash houses caused weakness in the market late in the session, May selling off to 78. The close was weak with May off 3-8 at 79l-8. Pope was on the list as sup ernumerary of the Central Church, fie having requested such an appointment. Later Mr. Pope telegraphed to the con ference asking that his name be re moved from the roll. The correction was made when the appointments were read at conference yesterday, but The Times correspondent had wired the list without, the correction. I lie ment estimate of the cotton 1906 placing the yield at 12,546,000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight proved much more bearish than the trade had expected and caused a sen sational break in prices accompa nied by active and exiiting trading in the cotton market today. The market had opened easy before the report was isc'ied under scattering liquidation and on rumors that the figures would prove bearish. Twelve thousand pounds have been'raised on a planta tion in Colletton county a few piles from Charleston. For several years tea has been marketed from Pine hurst, the government experimental garden at Sunimervllle, but the prod uct marketed today is the first of a purely commercial venture.
