CRATER. . Publisher to It voluntarily, arid there Is rto sense I in seeking more, which merely adds to the congestion. Sintered through Raleigh. N. C, poetofflce as mail matter of the sec ond class, in accordance with the Act Of Congress. March S, 187. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1006 Show Yourself, Mr. Judge. In a sermon at Charlotte, which was a trifle sensational, an evangelist, who to uoii known locally. Quoted a North Carolina judge of the superior court, as follows: If you bring these women be fore me and prove that they have played cards for prizes, I will see to it that they are put upon the chain gang with the nigger who shoots craps at five cents a crap." T.iira th. wiimlne-ton Messeneer. we want the name of the distinguished "Jurist" who would send the decent wo men of this grand old state to the chain gang with the lowest type of negro criminals. The alleged utterance from the bench is the most contemptible thing' of the kind ever put into print, and if any North Carolina judge said it he ought to be kicked out and forever iKraded. It is wrong "e admit, to condemn the court, but wl.en a Judge, so far forgets himself, when he is so ig norant that he cannot distinguish be tween black gamblers and the best wo men who play cards in their own homes, it Is time for the newspapers to pick him out and brand him, however high his station however great his fame. If any Judge made such a state ment he must know that he will not keep his word; if he keeps his word he rannnt keen his position, for North Carolina has not reached that point, thank God, where It would send our wives and mothers and sisters to the chain gang. There must be some mistake. We hope that the evangelist is in error, but if any Judge did make that disgusting threat it is right that the public should have his name. There are not enough Judges in North Carolina to send a de cent woman to the roads with black criminals there is not one judge who Would dare Impose that sentence. The Public and the Southern. President Finley of the Southern Railway has announced that schedules will be revised in January in the hope that there will be less delay hereafter in the movement of freight and pas senger traffic. The situation along this system for the past few months has been well nigh unbearable. On trunk and branch linesjtrains have been invariably late and this, with the heavy rush, has put the business people to considerable annoyance because of the failure to re ceive freight promptly. It is only fair, however, to assume that the manage ment has endeavored by every means within reason to relieve the conditions and the plan sooa to be adopted may hrlnar tremendous relief. While the public is condemning all of the rail roads common sense should convince and satisfy any man that the first aim of a railroad company is to operate trains on schedule time. Delays are expensive and dangerous. Train crews must work overtime, or wait at Junc tional points to relieve other crews, and they are paid while they wait. The whole service is thrown out of gear when schedules are disarranged, and the burden is heavier on the road than on those who travel. This often es capes the public mind. As we see It, the Southern is oper ating more trains over the trunk lines on a single track than physical condi tions will warrant. But this cannot be helped for the present. The enormous volume of business must move. For the past year or more contractors have been at work night and day on double tracks. These, however, cannot be con structed at once. In the same way the failure of the builders to deliver equip ment ordered months and months ago has seriously crippled the company and adds to its present distress. The Southern Railway is facing a serious problem. It might be advisable to give its freight and passenger so licitors an Indefinite furlough, for it cannot handle the business that comes The Norfolk Virginian-Pilot believes that Virginia should sell its holdings In the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad. Evidently, the Vir ginian-Pllot is familiar with the At lantic & North Carolina. WANT AD. The American Field of December 1, in a report of the championship stake of the Illinois Field Trial Club at Rob inson, Ills., says: "So far as the ten dogs are concerned which were tried out at Robinson, it may be stated that the owner of Prince Whltestone made good his promise to "snout" up more birds than anybody's dog. Prince Whltestone was there all the way and fairly burned up the field and square ly sent nine of the highest class field trail dogs and their handlers to the cleaner's. What this remarkable dog will do at Grand Junction with the great Champion Jessie Rodfleld's Count Gladstone, unquestionably one of the greatest bird finders In the history of field trials, remains to be seen. But Mr. Pace Is as anxious as ever to meet Mr. Sherwood and his great dog; in fact he places slight value on the fact that he has met and defeated eight of the greatest dogs In the country, for it is Mr. Sherwood's bird finder that he Is after."
