Famous murder trials in recent years have varied greatly as to duration and the time which it took the juries to arrive at a verdict. Here are the statistics: Dr. Samuel J. Kennedy. First trial, 16 court days, jury out three hours, 13 minutes, verdict guilty, first degree. .Second trial, 15 court days, jury out six hours, 35 minutes, verdict disagreement. Third trial, 36 court days, jury out 22 hours, 6 minutes, verdict dis agreement. Roland B. Mollneux, first trial 57 court days; jury out eight hours; verdict guilty, first degree. Second trial, 21 days; jury out I minutes; verdict "not guilty." Nan Patterson, first trial, trial Btopped owing to illness of juror at end of ten days. When Tom Walker, the negro who killed, two policemen at Fayetteville some weeks since and dangerously wounded another officer, ,aa tried and sentenced to bo hanged on the fifteenth of this month, it was an nounced that the execution vou'd be public, something that sounded strange to many just at this time as there has been no public execution in North Carolina in several years past. A doubt existed as to whether there was any special act in .regard to the matter, .some being of the opinion that each county could pur sue whatever course was desired in this respect. It is found that there is a law which provides that an ex ecution shall not be public, and dur ing the legislature of 1905 a special act was passed for Cumberland county that county Retting ready for a hanging giving the commis ore, and as much-removed from pub lic view as the means within his con Uol will allow."' Shareholders pay in from $82.00 to $83.00 per share, and tho interest on the installments makes tho share worth $100.00.
