SEAMY EXPERIENCE OF
REV. M8. MATHEWS
: RHEUMATISM
Cannot It Cured with Medicine
New Trciitnienl Just DlHi-0-re
(By Leased Wlro to The Times.)
Danver, Col., July 30. Rev.
Charles St. Claire Mathews, of
Hayes, Kansas, a Virginian by birth,
and' who was arrested by the police
and later pardoned and sent to St.
Anthony's Hospital, is entirely re
covered from his nervous breakddwn
and will leave in a day or so for his
home.
Rev. Mr. Mathews, when arrested,
was dazed and unable to account for
himsolf. He explains this by say
ng that is wife had always wanted
to visit Denver. He arranged to
precede her and deliver a series of
lectures, which would produce the
money necessary to join them. His
money ran short before he reached
Denver and he was weak from hun
ger. A stranger gave him a drink
of whiskey, which, he said, abso
lutely deprived him of his senses.
The police said he had a bottle of
whiskey in his pocket when arrest
ed, but Rev., Mr. Mathews has no
recollection of it. lie says the
, stranger must have given it to him.
He admits to having at one time
' been a cocaine fiend but he was
cured of the evil in Kansas City,
Kansas.
Mr. Mathews is thirty-nine years
old. He says he was born on a farm
near Norfolk, Va. His father, who
is a thirty-second degree mason,
also was a Baptist preacher. The
'. whole trouble of Mr. Mathews is at
tributed to overstudy. lie is now
engaged in writing a tlect lire enti
tled, '"The I'nderdog," based on his
own x perlenc.es.
