Washington, Dec. 21 The immi
gration statement for the month of
November, made public, by F. P.
Sargent, commissioner-general of im
migration and naturalization, shows
a surprlslnz increase in the .inward
passenger movement.
The total number of immigrants j K
from all countries landed In the
United States for the month of No
vember was 117, 47G, its compared
with 94,621 for the corresponding
month last year, and 61,374 for No
vember, 1905. This Is an Increase
of 91 per cent, over 1903, and 24
per cent, over 1906,

he no wage reduction at the sheet
mill of the American Sheet and Tin
Plate Company In the coming year. A
notice was posted at the plant today
that wages in 1908 would be the
same as in 1907. It Is believed that
after the first of the year the tin
mills in South Sharon and New Cas
tle will resume. The announcement
came as a Christmas greeting to the
men, who had feared a cut.

favor strongly the plan for an Issue
of emergency currency by the gov
ernment, properly secured. They are

Memphis Savings Bank went Into
the hands of a receiver this morning.
The capital stock is $294,100, ac
cording to the statement Issued De
cember 11, as against $416,.r00, ac
cording to the statement issued July
1. Deposits according to the last
statement, were f 1 , 5 3 1 , 9 4 9 . 4 3 . The
bank lost over $100,000 on the
worthless paper of n lumber com
pany some months ago, but it was
stated that this amount was mnde
good by the president, G. W. McRao,
and one or two directors. Other
bankers say no other banks are af
fected. Later. A statement has heen is
sued saying that the loss by the Mem
phis Savings Bank on the lumber
company has been assumed by the
board of directors, and that deposi
tors will lose nothing.
