New York, Feb. 17 Tiie local
cotton market made a poor -response
to the stronger cables, a lack of spec
ulative effort being held responsible
for the action of the list here. First
prices were only 2 to 9 points higher.
There was considerable bullish news
at hand, including statistics and dis
patches from the south and the very
few buyers to absorb offerings, as
sentiment generally in the pit was
pessimistic. .

New Orleans Cotton Market.
(By Leased Wire to The Times.)
New Orleans, La., Feb. 17.
There was very little of interest to
develop in the cotton market today.
Trade showed the glaring lack of
speculative support and as a conse-1
quence the market Was narrow and
extremely quiet, showing practically
no effect of the encouraging cables
received from Liverpool.; There was
moderate buying for the short ac
count and the levels wero advanced
slightly as a result, but the market
was by no means strong and trade
suffered largely through the lack of
support from the bull contingent.
At noon the market ruled quiet 1
to 3 points above the opening fig
ures and 8 to 9 points above Satur
day's, finals.
