Immediate Gain of Seven to Ten Points Rather Disappointing. . (By Leased Wire to The Times.) New Orleans, La., July 1. There was only a limited interest displayed in spot cotton during the first half of the day, buyers generally reporting a waiting market. The offerings were fairly good so far as the better grades wefe con cerned, but the Intermediate qualities, which are in better demand just now, are not so readily obtainable,' as the bulk of stocks remaining in - factor's hands run to high grade staples, which have been carried for some time past under limitations. It is probable the effect of today's bureau report will be to create a better demand after the figures shall have been thoroughly an alyzed by the mill interests, but at this writing the market is distinctly dull and uninteresting. V 'Bureau day" in the contract depart ment was singularly devoid of interest or effect. The trade had generally ex pected an advance on any condition short of 83, and when the flash came at 81.2 a sharp bulge should naturally have followed. But the market lacked outside Interest and floor traders proved unequal to the occasion, to the end that an immediate gain of 710 points was the rather disappointing result. On second call the net - gain from yester- day's figures showed at points on the new crop positions. Open. High. Low. Close. Joseph List on, alias Joseph O'Brien, was held for the grand jury on the charge of ar son in the Manhattan avenue police court, Williamsburg, today, after Fire Marshal Brophy had presented his evidence to show how O'Brien had tried to burn the -Berlin depart- ment store at Broadway and Wil loughby avenue yesterday. The attempt at arson was the most daring in the history of the crime in New York. Last fall O'Brien was sent to the island for throwing a stone, through the plate glass win dow of the Berlin store. Yesterday he got the idea of revenge which was strong in him. Going to the store, he asked to see some lace curtains. When the salesgirl got them down, O'Brien watched his chance and ap plied a match to a big pile of the curtains. Salesgirl Helped Capture Him. In the excitement that followed the man tried to get away, but the girl followed him and pointed him out to the store . superintendent. A dozen clerks captured Liston and he was turned over to the police. The blaze was extinguished before any material damage was done. A panic among the women customers in the store was narrowly averted. Sleuths Watch Every Steamer. (Continued From First Page. oration performed tx Dr. Wilson. There id a warning in this of the "- importance of seeing thai competi tion in the iron and steel industry and trade is kept alive. There Is but one way to make sure of this and that is by making competition world wide. It is absurd to contend that the industry needs protection in this country, and the only use and effect of the tariff barrier against foreign competition is to enable, the great concerns here to unite for the sup pression off domestic competition, New York Uournai of Commerce, SILVER SERVICE lc WANTS lc Classified advertisements for this column will be accepted at one cent per word for each Issue, CASH with the order.
