LITTLE DOING IN SPOT.
Few Small Orders, But Most Bayers
Are Out of Market.
(By Leased Wire to The Times)
New Orleans, L... July 18. The spot
cotton market showed no appreciable
change In conditions today. There
were a few small orders on hand for
execution, but as a rule buyers are out
of the market and, as the mill demand,
especially from the other side, has
about petered out, expect to remain so
for the remainder of the expiring
season. '; .;
Present onWing are fairly large but
not particularly desirable, in that there
Is hardly any middling or strict mid
dling available, and what little de
mand there Is appears to run. almost
entirely to those grades. Prices today
were possibly a shade steadier than
during yesterday, but even then fac
tors' concessions of l-18cl-8c from the
board level are necessary to the con
summation of trades.
Future contracts were without defi
nite trend or Interest today, The open
ing was three points up on the new
crop, but thereafter prices moved back
and forth listlessly over a narrow
range, and on the noon closing stood
it an almost exact level with yester
day's figures. - . .

now regards the situation-as very

necessary, to preserve order. ;
Operators For Open Shop. . .
I The coal operators renew their In
tention to maintain the open shop at
all hazards. Eight small commercial ;
mines have signed the union wage
scale. "
The vicinity of the mines bristles
with the camps of union miners, -who
walk around with shotguns on their
shoulders. To while away the time
the villagers are having arbor meet-'
ings, revivals, baseball tourneys and
pic-nics. - The strikers are perfectly
comfortable. ; ' .
The strikers, having scored many
points of advantage, are optimistic.
They claim to have added 8,000 men
to a nucleus on July 1 of 4,000. Not
since 1894, when Gov. Jones brought
the entire military forces of the state
here, has ther mine situation been as
critical. One-half dozen deaths have
already occurred. r
The strikers or their sympathizers
have searched all trains for strike
breakers. Before the expiration of
24 hours it is not improbable that
every military company In Jefferson
county and the entire Alabama caval
ry squadron will be patrolling the
mining regions in an effort to pre
serve order after the outbreaks of the
last two days and the critical sus
pense which was ererywhe evidtnt
last night.
Sheriff Asks For Cavalry.
Sheriff Higdon has asked Gov.
Comer to order the cavalry encamp
ment of the Alabama squadron moved
from Montgomery to Birmingham,
having the men here at a moment's
notice to give aid. The cavalry
squadron consists of Troop D, Birm
inghom, and troops from Camden,
Montgomery and Selma. The men
are equipped with army rifles, re
placing the old carbines, but they are
drilling at Montgomery dismounted.
No More "Shotgun Meetings."
Sheriff Hidgon's idea in bringing
them here is to have them replace or
co-operate with special deputies in
sections where marked hostility has
been shown the officers and to do
mounted patrol duty over the county.
Sheriff Hldgon announces positively
that no more meetings of armed men
with shotguns and rifles will be tol
erated. He states that he will order
arrests In all such cases reported,
and that the military will be instruct
ed accordingly.
Major Ledbetter has arrived at the
military camp at Blossberg, and or
der out of chaos is reported from
there. The men are fast getting
down to service conditions.
A number of wires are reported to
have been cut by unknown parties in
the vicinity of Pratt City.
Are Strikers Tapping Wires.
The alarming frequency with which
every move of the authorities, no
matter how carefully planned, be
comes public property among the
strikers and their sympathizers loads
officials at the front to believe that a
regular system of wire-tapping is In
vogue.
