Will Not Be Abandoned, and Suspen
sion of Trains is Only Temporary.
Mr. N. E. Swan, secretary of the
Beaufort chamber of commerce,
writes The Times as follows:
On account of the general impres
sion that the bridge from Beaufort
to Morahead Is not safe and will be
abandoned by the road, we will be
glad to have you state through your
paper that a letter has been received
from Mr. Fitzgerald, receiver and
general manager of the road, in which
he says that the temporary abandon-1
ment of the bridge Is to make a few
repairs. During the , very severe
storm of a few weeks ago the bridge
was slightly damaged,, and while'
making the repairs it was thought j
best to discontinue running trains
across for a few days in order that
the repairs may be completed as soon !
9Q nncqihla A lnrp-p nnmher nf nracu. 1
soted piles have arrived and the pile
drivers are constantly at work on the
repairs. Mr. Fitzgerald says that the
managers are not entertaining any
idea of abandoning the bridge perma
nently, but expect to make it a per
manent structure. ;
Trains will be running as usual in
a few days.
The great Mecklenburg eontest,
which has been running for the last
few days,' will draw to a close tomor
row at noon. - '
In The Evening Times office an
alarm clock will be set to go off at
the appointed hour, and at the sound
of the clock the contest will immedi
ately be declared closed.
This has been one of the most in
teresting contests ever conducted by
this paper. There has never been a
contest of similar nature undertaken
in Raleigh before, and it has been of
interest, not only to the aspirants,
but to outsiders, ever since the open
ing.. The winners of this great trip are
going to get a free trip to one of the
south's favorite resorts, The Mecklen
burg Hotel, at Chase City, Va., a re
sort that is .well known for its beau- ;
tiful location and surroundings. Here I
is one of the leading social resorts
of this section.
The Mecklenburg Springs Hotel,
although only four years old, is one
of the most extensively advertised re
sorts in the south. The water com
ing from the springs Is known to be
of the best, the service at the hotel
has always proven to be among the
leaders everything being done for
the convenience and pleasure of the
guest.- ' ;
If you have any votes see that they
reach this office the first thing ia the
morning. Don't hold them until the
last moment, as for some reason they
may be miscounted. If you or any
of your friends are in the race, come
to The Times office at the appointed
hour and see the votes counted.
