Mr. Smith enjoys the distinction of having . fought through three war3, and -though 82 years old is more active than thous ands of men at 60. To use his own expression, he is "as sound as a dollar in tooth, heart, lungs, mind, and still has the world under hts feet." . .- "; --V-, "I am livlng,"sald Mr. Smith, "on the same spot that my great grand father pre-empted during the reigh of Charles II." Mr. Smith was orderly sergeant of Co. H, 1st X. C. regiment, and fol lowed the fortunes of General Zach ary Taylor in the Mexican War. Ha enlisted in 1846. During the administration of Franklin Pierce, Brlgham Young, the Mormon chief, denied the au thority of the United States govern ment, and secure, as he thought, In the wilds of Utah, he defied the mili tary authorities. " 'Can't you ' make Brlgham ! Young behave?' the president asked i Albert Sidney Johnson, one of the best, soldiers that ever lived. "General Johnson said he could, and we started out from Fort Leaven worth, Kan., for the Mormon settle ment in Utah, 1,600 miles away. We were gone two years. There wasn't much war to it. It was what you might call a 'leg war.' Brlgham Young gave up as quick as we got there." : After this Mr. Smith retired to private life, and lived in peace until the Civil War broke out. "I'm the original secessionist," said Mr. Smith, "and I haven't been reconstructed yet. I believe just as much in states' rights as I did before the war. I made the first Confed erate flag. I designed the "Stars and Bars" that we fought under four years. Reconstructad? Huh not by a d n sight! "And I'm a Tar Heel, young man; every inch of me. Don't you know the very best type of the white race live in North Carolina, and it's been that way : ever since th3 beginning. Here's how I feel about this old state if I could take you to my home, I could show you better: At my home I have three flags. On the right is the old Confederate flag, the Stars and Bars. To the left is the Stars and Stripes, and right up above them both is the flag of North Carolina! And that is how it stands with me.',' Mr. Smith entered the army a pri vate. He served his country faith fully during the whole of the war and retired a major. He is a fine, interesting old man. May he live many years longer. llURiTEDSCHOlMSHSP If yon determine that you want to succeed In business, that you have . the stuff in you to make a book-keeper, stenographer, telegrapher or a banker, write us and let us tell you of our scholarships. "A Comedy in Black and White," a pantomime picture, and a decided departure in film production is a winner. The hour Is midnight, the moon peeps over the hill, lover appears un der, Dearie's window, serenades, she understands, descends to the front veranda, papa gets wise, a bucket of water and a swift kick, Dearie weeps, then silence. The comedy In this is rich and the effect of the picture which Is made un entirely of the pranks of shadow actors is beyond accurate description. It is great. Meriditli Nicholson Writes Entertain. Ing Novel Centering About Ral- elgh and Columbia. The old story of what the governor of North Carolina said to the gover nor of South Carolina has come to the front again, this time in a de lightful romance by Merldith Nich olson, the well known novelist. It forms the centre of the plot which is as improbable as it is interesting! The improbability of the whole story perhaps only heightens the interest which is sustained from cover to cover. "The Little Brown Jug at Kildare" will be put on the market by the publishers, tha Bobbs-Merrlll Company, about the last of Novem ber and will doubtless prove one of the best sellers of the season. Lit tle brown Jugs of Kildare will no doubt be all the go. Kildare is an Imaginary town on the North and South. Carolina bor der, where many exciting events take place. The state house at Raleigh and at Columbia are two chief cen ters of interest. Other North Caro lina towns are mentioned. A charm ing romance runs through the story woven around the daughters of the two governors and two young men, bosom friends, who unknown to each other, become involved in the affairs of state government, each sustaining the role of governor assisted by the governor's daughter. . A delightful love story is the result The local color Is good, the author, Mr. NIcn-, olson, having spent some time in taa state --before writing his book. It is attractively bound, the cover J RALEIGH, . N. C. Incorporated. J. H. KING, President. M. C. KING, Secretary. CHARLOTTE, N C. How to Get Strong. P. J. Daly, of 1247 W. Congress St., Chicago, tells of a way to become strong; he says: "My mother, who is old and very feeble, s deriving so much benefited from Electric Bitters that I feel It's my duty to tell those Who need a tonle and strengthening medicine about It. In my mother's case a marked gain In flesh has re Milted, insomnia has been overcome, and she Is steadily growing stronger," Electric Bitters quickly remedy stom ach, liver and kidney complaints.
