The most important case tried was that against Ira Oakley, assault, with deadly weapon. Oakley went to the house of John Gregory, who had threatened him with prose-! tution, with the intention of killing' Gregory. The evidence of the prose cution is that he shot at Gregory and his fleeing family several times, took possession of their humble home and broke up the dishes, chairs, beds, etc. Mrs. Gregory, who could not show a very creditable. '.character, gave a i warm description of Ira Oakleys "pedigree." Mrs. Gregory was very positive in her declarations and ans- wered the 'questions of Oaklfty's at-' I torneys with - vigor and vehemence. ' Jim Underwood's testimony was hum-' jorous in the extreme. It seems that Jim had been called on to defend the Gregory family, but it was a harder proposition than he had looked for. He ran at the first fire, "looking after Jim", as he expressed it. Other wit nesses were examined, and the case went over to the afternoon session. Oakley pleads guilty and the Only question is that of sentence. Other cases Were disposed of this morntog as follows: State vs. Southern Railway, failing to construct and maintain automatic gates at the Cabarrus street crossing, plead, guilty, and judgment is sus pended on payment of costs. : Logan Green, colored, appeal from justices' court, charged with retail ing Not guilty. James Leonard, appeal from jus- i tlce's court, carrying concealed' weap on. Not guilty. Yesterday afternoon's Bession be gan with the trial of Lennie Jones, an ink-black Ethiopian, "age fifteen or sixteen. She was charged with shooting at a little negro boy. A bit of romance was injected into the afterenoon proceedings in the trial of W. M. Dannahay and Richard Kennon, affray. The lady in the case, "Miss Mattie" by name, was in the court room". According to the tvidonce, Kennon was courting the girl and on a. certain night was es corting her homeward, when he en countered Dannahay. Dannahay was also in love with the girl. He butted ;n. took the girl away from Kennon. chased Kennon around a block with a brick and caught him, only to be slasiied with a pocket-knife. The "romantic" did not seem to appeal to his honor, and he ordered the attorneys to cut it out." The following were the cases tried and the disposition made of each: Lennie Jones, colored, plead pullty to the charge of an assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to twelve months in jail.
