A very pleasant occasion was the observance of the 80th birthday of Mrs. H. J. Askew, which occurred on Sat urday, the 5th Inst. Mrs. Askiuw is one of Raleigh's oldest citizens,, having lived here since she was ten years old. She received many telegrams of congratulations and numerous kind remembrances. Her daughter. Mrs, I. K. Emerson, came from Baltimore to be with her on her natal day. and several of her old time friends were with her at dinner at the home of her daugher. Mrs. J. A. Holding. A novel plan, and one that worked beautifully, was used to mix the crowd up and get everyone acquainted. As j each one entered the door a card and pencil was handed them. At the top of the card was a space for. tliejwn ers name, undenieatli was a space headed by "Who are you?" where everyone present w-as to write th-ir names. This method proved the great est success and at easy way of gett'ng acquainted. Kven tlie most bashful fieshmun could not refuse to exchange names when a card was so charmingly offered with a sweet smile. A prize was offeied to the one get ting the most names, and Miss Eliza beth Hill was the fortunate winner of a mysteriously wrapped package, I which was gracefully presented by Mr. Bergthold, student secretary of the Y. M. C. A. There was a shout of laugh ter when the package disclosed it tiny, but handsome, automobile. Miss Hill had met 296 of the young men. One of the most enjoyable features of the evening was the dainty refresh, monts, which wore charmingly served bythe young men, In a most beautiful ly" decorated dining-room. Exquisite tasto had been, displayed in the decora. Hons. ' Beautiful pnhns and ferns were banked ulong the wall. In t ho center stood the table with a centerpiece of acailet, sage, while bunches of '.'bleed ing hearts" and flickering red caudles carried out the color scheme or rd nd tvhlte. These tasteful decorations were effected by Mr. Springs, nssisted" by the efficient president of the Y. M. C. A.. These young men are to be con gratulated on their work and the Y. M. C. A. on their successful reception. William Hinton, a colored prisoner on the Wake county road gang, made his escape a week or more ago, for whom there was a reward of $5.00. Mr. A. G. Denton, a newly elected justice of the peace of St, Matthews township, captured William ' a night or two ago and hurried with his fug itive from justice to Judge Harry Roberts to instruct him in the judi cial modus operandi for delivering his catch and catching the five dollar reward. Judge Roberts prepared a proper commitment and sent Mr. Denton with it to Deputy Sheriff Stell's house that the fugitive might again find a roosting place in a steel cage. Wm, Hinton is a musical cuss, and I w'.iilo riding wilh .Mr. Denton to Sheriff Stell's home, was humming, that familiar song: "Ctood-bye John, I can't, stop long. I'm going hack to my own thica biddy." Mr. Denton told William to let up on that song, for he would soon have! him where the dogs wouldn't bite hinii Officer Stell was awakened and in formed by Mr. Denton that he nad a prisoner for him. Gulley will go to ..Raleigh- Mon day to appear in habeas corpus pro ceedings before Justice Walker for John and Ollie Evans, charged with complicity in the murder of Sue Hold ing, a negro man, near Foreslville a few weeks ago. ; On December 4th, the Jr. O. IT; A. ! M., No. 35, of Wake Forest, presented a Bible and flag to the graded school 0! Youngsville. Dr. W. C. Brewer delivered the address in presenting the Bible and flag in a very effective manner, and Prof. R. H. Ferrell, who is principle of the school, re ceived them .with an eloquent ad dress. Rev. T. C. Singleton, who is chaplain of Council No. 35, made the opening and closing prayer.
