SHOTWELL) mev V-n'lr iu.iir.ii oa 'i'..t..i i,.. I b'Shest piTces of the year were record ed, notably in Southern Pacific which sold at the highest price in its history, when it touched 12L Union Pacific sold at ft4, St. Paul 147 and Reading at 13514. Copper shares were active and shar ed In the Improvement. Smelters was the leader of the group. Amul!fam,!ited Copper touched 71. In connccton with these shares It was reported that large bids for copper metals ' wore, be iug made seeivfry by consumers. National Lead was the leader in the group of specialties, touching 83, a. net gain of three points. ., Its strength Is due to the continued . reports "of Im provement in the lead trade. Consolidated (Jas advanced 2 points to US'Ji, the highest price it has touch ed since tile break In. January. ' Rock Island preferred rose half a point.. Canadian Pacific opened witli an ad vance uf 1 points, quickly rose an additional point. Rrle was strong around 87. Wabash isues were frac tionally higher in the early trauma but. later became heavy. In London securities were strong be cause of announcements of the settle ment of the Balkan situation. Ameri can shares were strong and higher. Nevada Consolidated was the fea- gjture of. the cupper group on the New ' York curb market. Cumberland-Ely isold at 8 and the United Copper at 13. In the silver group Nipissing, Kerr Iake and LuL- Hose were the I most active '.issues and sold at their ' previous high prices, GoGIdficld Con solidated was conspicuous for its strength -and advanced to 51. At mid-day stocks were at about the best prices of the session with Union Pacific selling at 184, the highest price It has touched this year, and Southern Pacific at 122, the highest price at which it has ever sold in its history. The improvement in the copper shares became more pronounced when the New York metal exchange advanc ed the price of copper' motul c. per pound. : In the traction group Brook lyn Transit attracted attention by ad vancing a point to 73 While Inter-borough-Metropolitan preferred de clined nearly a point. New York Cotton Letter. (By W.'B. Hlbbsi & -CO.) ; New York, March 29 The market advanced six points further on the old crop and four on the new this morning from Saturday's prices on further covering of shorts and more building by some of the cdique brok ers. Liverpool made a full response to our advance of Saturday and this, together with the strength in the stock market and further advances in security values and continued abundance of easy and cheap money were all pointed to as arguments sug gesting higher prices for cotton in sympathy. March went to 9.53, May 9.48, July 9.38, October, 9.25, De cember 9.08.': As there was no im provement to be noted In the cloth and yarn markets in the demand for spot cotton and present prices show a recovery of 20 points of $1 per bale over the low level reached last Tues day there was too much profit-taking on the rise and selling by spot In terests aad southern operators for the market to absorb and carry the Improvement forward. As a conse quence the active trading and strength of the morning gave way to dullness and easier conditions in the late afternoon. The situation a:id outlook still sug gests nothing better than a 10 to 20 point trading market, either way. Trade conditions will have to Im prove very materially, particularly in the print cloth and yarn market con ditions before a real bull movement can be encouraged. Li the mean time the Masters Spinners Associa tion of England estimate the invlsl bio stocks of American cotton In the hands of European : spinners at 3,048,000 bales against 1,555,000 last year. Liverpool closed 3 points higher on spots today and 4 to 5 points on fu tures. Weather' conditions in the cot ton belt are generally favorable. Movement of the old crop, supplies large for the season, and demand is still limited. New York, Money Market. (BV Leased Wire to The Times.)
