Gov ernor Kitchln says of this defendant: "Prisorer was convicted for selling whiskey contrary to law and sen tenced to twelve months on the roads. Of this prisoner the gov ernor savr: 'Prisoner was convicted of steal ing $30 in money and sentenced to two years on the roads. . He has served nineteen months. The governor says: Prisoner was convicted of selling whiskey unlawfully in three cases and sentenced to jail for eighteen mouths-six months in each ease. He has served thirteen months. Many citizens, including officials and strong temperance advocates, stated that he has been punished sufficient ly. Owing to his otherwise good character, aud to the destitute con dition of his wife and children, and to the punishment he has endured, a pardon is granted, conditional upon his good behavior. The prisoner is a cripple." Colon Davis, found guilty of re ceiving stolen goods. Buncombe coun ty. - The governor's statement about this pardon is as follows: "Colon Davis was convicted of re ceiving stolen goods and sentenced to one year on the public roads at the August, 1908, term of Buncombe criminal court. The reasons for his pardon are: : "In this case the owner of the property in asking for prison er's pardon states that prisoner, a seventeen-year-old boy, was invaigl ed, in her opinion, into taking the stolen goods by his co-defendant.
