V. : Ending Governor of Virginia Re fuses Respite to Bob Armstrong Death of Mrs.- Vickers Mrs. Geo. Nash Entertains. (Special to The Times) Durham, N. C, June 24 A peculiar noise has heard last night under a house on Chapel Hill street and upon investigation a ne gro child, not over four hours old, was found. The child had been de serted and left to die. The mother of the child is Bessie Tener, a young ne gro girl, and little more than a child herself. The police took no action In the matter, owing to the extreme youth of the mother, and the baby was taken care of by neighbors. It is well, and doing finely, in spite of the cruel treatment. With : the primaries but one day oft there is little excite ment here in political circles. With the , exception of Mr. "s C. Bfawley there are no new candi dates in the field, and the old offi cers will all be re-nominated. The voters seem to be taking little inter est in the campaign, and as yet there is absolutely no political talk In the air. All the four candidates for con gress from this district have been here in the past month and each seems to be confident of his success. According to the local politicians there will be a small vote polled to morrow. The Baptist Yonng People's Vnion. Last night's session wound up the meeting of the Baptist Young Peo ple's Union here and the delegates are leaving this morning for their homes. A great amount of work was accomplished and much enthusiasm was aroused. The feature of yester day's session was the address by Mr. Spillman, who is one of the best Sunday school lecturers ever heard here. He took as his subject "The Young Person and His Bible". Giv ing as reasons why a young person should know his Bible, he said: "He should know the book as a matter of culture. Culture is the personal appropriation of ; the best things written by the master nr.ncis of the world. . The man who essays to know anything about science and leaves out the first sentence in the first chapter of Genesis has missed the very foundation upon which sci ence is built. If you think you'should know something about drama read Job and you will get it. It can give Shakespeare's works pointers every day. I am personally fond of poetry and have read most of the English poets, but for real verse turn to the Psalms of David, especially that one which begins 'The Lord Is my shep herd'. It is the masterpiece of song. If you care to know something of his tory and the great historians the Bible 1b the book for you,- for? It con tains some of the best biographical sketches in existence. If you young men want to read law look up the laws of Moses, the foundation upon which is built our present legal sys tem." Continuing his address, he said: "You who are standing with your faces toward the future want to use that masterpiece as a text-book, which will give you the best possible training for any line of work which you will be likely to enter. A telegram was received yesterday afternoon by Attorney Benjamin Lov- ensteln from the governor of Vir ginia, which reads: "Your telegram received. It will be remembered that the last respite was granted that the tes timoney of Bob Armstrong in I fell t be heard. Armstrong did not tell the same tale to Governor Mann that he told in an affidavit and the governor said the law must take its course. Armstrong now says that the govern or misunderstood him and that he can clear matters up if granted an other audience. It. is not likely that this will happen. Armstrong is well known here and has been in trouble and served time on the Durham coun ty roads. Hamilton, the condemned man, will hang, it looks like now. Mrs. H. U.
