Provisions, New York Cotton tfetter. : (By W. B. Hlbbs & Company.) New York, . Sept. 14 Indications point to the continuance of an irregular market with chances more In favor of a saggering tendency than otherwise, for the present, trading Is very dull as the leading market Interests and local .operators i are still Inclined to await further developments in conrfeo tion witn the threatened big storm still nfT thn rnant nt Tovoo . , ft rained heavily all along the coast In the Corpus Christl district last night and these rains extended to Galveston today with high winds and high water, The weather bureau reports, how ever, show the storm is diminishing in force and moving In a northwesterly direction and It Is, therefore, hoped it will pass into Mexico and leave the crop of Texas uninjured, ' There was a slump of 10 points on September to 13.39 for that option and 5 to 8 points on the rest of the list In the early trading with October sell ing down to 12.95; December 12.90; Jan uary 12.87 and March 12.96, but this was recovered later on covering of shorts on reports of storm in Texas, with October advancing 3 points Over yesterday s to 13.03 and December 12.98, During the afternoon trading was very small, with the market awaiting fur ther developments. It continues a traders market for moderate turns, with sentiment favor ing lower prices in a gradual way, pending the outcome of the September deal and weather conditions as affect Ing the progress of the crop. Sales of December and January, If judiciously made on further hard spots, should show fair profits in pursuing a scalpers policy in operations. Chicago Grain. (By Leased Wire to The Times.) Chicago,- Sept. 14 Weak cables, favorable weather and bearish foreign news caused an easy market In the wheat pit . this morning with prices off to c under general commission house selling. Liverpool was c lower against our decline of yesterday. The heavy tone there was due to heavy accumulations and small demand Further rains in Argentine with the outlook satisfactory on increased acreage, weakened all the European markets. " Corn started weak on general selling by commission houses. The frosts that were predicted failed to materialize and the crops are rapidly growing to safety. . Oats were lower with the grains Local professional traders including some of yesterday's buyers were the best sellers. . Provisions opened sharply lower all around. Here, too, there was general commission selling on the further big slump in the' hog market. Part of the selling was for short accounts, Chicago grain quotations ranged as follows: Wheat Open. High. Superior Court In Session With Judge Council r Presiding Growing Re vival, in Tobacco Citizens Attend . Exposition. (Special to The Times.) Ashevllle, N. C; Sept 14 A fea ture of the September term of su perlor court which convened here Monday, Judge Council, presiding, Is the fact that out pf the seventy odd cases on the ' Calendar,-about thirty are those in which the Southern Railway appears as defendant. This is . a three weeks , civil,, term: and it overlaps the October term when the criminal' and civil court begins and makes six weeks of continuous Bit ting.'.;.: : .: V '.:' There is fast growing up a. revival of Interest In the growing' of tobacco in north Buncombe, Madison and part of Yancey county, but it is the Bur loy variety that is now' being grown The acreage 1b small as yet but those who have planted it have been so suc cessful that nmay of the farmers ex press the intention of engaging in Us cultivation next year, and some even go so far as to say that there will again be tobacco warehouses estab llshed in this mountain section. A farmer of north Buncombe brought into Ashevllle yesterday some leaves which he said were of average size and which he had grown this year One of them was forty-two inches long. On one and three-fourths acres be says that he will make . $200 which he considers a conservative es timate. As is well known Western North Carolinaywas once the banner section in the state for tobacco. The price went down and the lands wore out at about the same time. The method then was to plant it in new ground and when the soil was exhausted to clear more land. Naturally the new ground also gave out. But the ad vantage of the new kind of tobacco seems to be that it .can be grown on any good land. Buncombe has accepted the propo sition of the United States Depart ment of Agriculture and will have experimental farm stations establish ed all over tne county. E. D. Weav er, a progressive farmer; has been chosen as zVe. county instructor and will have dmrge of establishing the stations. . It is estimated that as many as 75 Asheville people left here Tuesday to attend the Appalachian Exposition at Knoxville, which opened Monday. Asheville has a good exhibit and there is being much interest mani fested in the matter. The local baseball club ended the season over $1,600 in, arrears and thisamount.niust be rnae up before a team can be securednext year. It is said, however, that (tiiis will be done. v BLEASE WINS NOMINATION. South Carolina Nominates Cole L. Blease For Governor, (By Leased Wire to The Times) Columbia,. S.
