C, Nov. 17 .To day is being celebrated in this city as corn judging day and the occasion is a gala day in the history of Wash ington", The committee of arrange ments appointed by the Chamber of Commerce have been working assid uously and a very interesting pro gram of the events for the day is the result. Several excursions were operated over the different railroads leading into the city and a record breaking crowd is here from all over the adjoining counties of this sec tion. The corn exhibits and corn judging are being held in the large tobacco warehouse on the 'northern suburb of the city and a public oys ter roast was tendered the visitors at the manufacturing plant of the Eureka Lumber Company Six hand some sojjd silver loving cups award ed by Mr. C. H. Fuller, of Providence, U. 1., ami a number of handsome guns given by a 'prominent northern manufacturer are among the prizes to be given for the best exhibits of corn on this day. There, ace also a number of other prizes given by local firms. In the afternoon the Tar Heel Mo tor Boat Club will give a very inter esting and exciting program of races between different speed boats in the club on Pamlico river for the benefit of the visitors. Large numbers of farmers ate ex pected to visit this city on Thursday and everything wil be done by our citizens to give them a cordial and hospitable welcome. News reached tais city yesterday that a Mr. Elijah Hardisnn, of Choco winity township, was held up on the county road near Oriental a few days ago and assaulted and robbed by an unknown white man and negro. It seems that Mr. Hardison vas walk ing about three miles from Oriental when he was accosted by the two men and asked for live dollars in change in exchange for a bill, Pulling a roll of' bills out of his pocket, he started to make the desired change, when one -of. the-men pulled a re volver and shot him in tine head, the shot only stunning him at- the time. He was then robbed and the men made good their escape.-' Mr. Hardi son was later found and taken to Oriental for medical treatment.
