'' Col. Alexander Boyd Andrews, brave a soldier as ever fought for any cause, a railroad builder whose every effort was one of construction and the foremost citizen of North Carolina today, was seventy yean old yesterday. In all of these years Col. Andrews was activeor he should have been active if his career from the time he reached early man hood Is an index to Ills childhood days. Col. Andrews was born near Kianklinton, Franklin county, July 23, 1X41. He was born a Tar Heel and will be one until he dies an event which his thousands of friend hope will be far in the future. Col. Andrews rose to the position of first vice-president of the South em Railway, not through favoritism but -by means of a long series of ac complishments, of triumphs over ob stacles that would have overcome less intrepid spirit. Of distinguished ancestry, he has done nothing that has not reflected credit on his breed ing and on himself. ; Col. Andrews enlisted as a private in Company E, First Notrh Carolina Cavalry. He was promoted to second lieutenant, rose from that position to first lieutenant and wiw later made a captain. He followed the Immor tar J. E. B. Stuart in many of his campaigns and no braver officer ever led a company than he. Capt. An drews was with Stuart when this general made his memorable raid around McClellan's army. His horse was shot from under him at one time, but he was not Injured until Septem ber 22, 1863, when a bullet pierced his lung and shattered a part of his spine. .' . ; Shot Through Lung. It was not believed Captain An drews could survive this terrible wound and a correspondent wrote to the Fayetteville Observer: "No braver or better man has fallen dur ing the war. He was universally be loved by all." But Captain Andrews recovered, thanks to his strong con si it ut ion and stronger will. As t.reat Oaks Grow. Col. Andrews began his railroad career in 1859 as a clerk for the com pany that was building the Old Blue Ridge Railroad from Anderson to Walhalla, S C. Col. Andrews is al most literally the father of the Blue Ridge and he has .ever believed that the extension of this road across Rabun Gap is the best route from Charleston to the great west. In South Carolina they are still counting on Col. Andrews to complete the road, and there' Is no doubt that he would do it if it were possible to do so in his life time. His Greatest Achievement. He was superintendent of the Ral elgh & Gaston Railroad in 1867 and rose step by step to his present posi tion of power. His greatest monu ment, however, is the Western North Carolina Railroad, which he had completed by his own indominatable will, and resources. Col. Andrews fought obstacles . erected by nature and overcame them. He promised the legislature that he would build that road and he kept his word. It was probably the most remarkable feat ever accomplished. The state and south were poor in resources at that time, but Col. Andrews was rich in determination and succeeded Strong In Body and Mind. It was said of Col. Andrews today that his phenomenal success in the railroad world has been due to noth ing more than his correct judg ment of men. He displayed this judgment while a leader of cavalry in the War Between the Sections and today his Judgment is great. His strong constitution was only exceed ed by a stronger mind. Popular With All. At seventy years of age Col. An drews was in better physical condi tion than in five years. Like old wine, he improves as the years pass over his head. He has been most happy in his home life and his em ployes show a devotion to him that speaks well for his generalship. There be thousands of people who wil lwlsh for him many more anni versaries.
