Wilmington, Oct. 1 4 Joe Hurst, a negro serving a twelve months sentence on the county roads was shot yesterday bv Guards Krnest Aiken and Hicks, while he was at tempting to make li is escape troni the convict camp on the . Federal Point road, about four miles from the city. The negro was peppered in the back with eight or nine buck shots. lie was carried to the Walker Memorial Hospital. It is stated that lie has an . excellent trance lor recovery if no complica tions develop. Another negro named Murray made a break for liberty at the ime time as Hurst, but he stopped when commanded to do sp by the guards. Hurst was sentenced at the last term of superior court for forgery. He had been at work at the camp only a week or two. Hurst admitted later that it was foolish for him to attempt to escape with several guards so close to him, but he thought he woudl take a chance. When he did not obey the command of the guards to halt lie was fired at and wounded. Knsign George Williams, who Ins been In. charge of the local post of the Salvation Army for the past two months, received orders yesterday directing him to assume charge of the army work at Columbus, Ga.
