Vacancy, Senator Simon Guggenheim
being the single member. from Colo
rado. Allowing tlia. the new state
ol Arizona will return two Demo
crats which is a .certainty, and that
the new state of New Mexico will
send two Republicans, 'which is not
so certain, the Democrats need onlv
lour more to make the senate a tie,
and live more to give them a majori
ty or two. They are counting on
two more Democrats from .Colorado,
one to lill existing vacancy and one
to succeed Senator .Guggenheim,
who will not be a candidate. The
Republicans are about ready to con
cede this '.much."- Tiiev next expect,
to make a gain in .Nebraska, and
elect a successor to senator .Norris
Urown, and a fourth is looked lor
from Montana. Hot h ol ihcse slates
are now controlled by the Democrats
and thev expect to hold. them. J he
following states atTord tiiem chances
to got tue filth. New Jersey. Dela-
ware., and Illinois, and also t;ie pos
sibility ol a coalition between the
Democrats and Progressives of the
New Mexico legislature, whereby
one Democrat, and one Progressive
Republican may be elected. Then il
there is a Democrat ic. wave, ii is
possible that, some Republicans who
now regard their scats as secure,
might be obliged to surrender to
Democrats. 1
The terms ol Ihirtv-one senators
will expire on March 1, 11)1;!. bul ol
these the tourteen wao are Demo
crats come from slates wnere the
party stands little chance to lose
with two exceptions, one from West
Virginia, and one from Maine, Still
the Democrats maintain that under
present conditions, and with Demo
cratic prospects brighter than thav
have been in many years, tliey are
warranted In believing that, taey will
retain these two states and continue
10 hold the senators lrom taotn.
However well or otherwise the
hopes of the Democrats may bo
lounded, thev have nevertheless al
ready begun to wage the contest
