Double the THE TARIFF Belief That It Will Not Survive June 30 When the Funds Give Out NOT WORTH THE MONEY The Tariff Hoard Will Ti a Vntur.il Death in Siv Months II' Ih-iiiocratie Signs Are True Will Kef'ise to Appropriate Money For Further Maintenance of the Hoard Democrat Do Not Belie vr If Is Worth $22.-,000 Aiiuiinlly--Mo!iey tilves Out .liino With. I By Winiield Jones.) Washington, Jan. 4. Tim .tariff hoard has hut six more months to live If Democratic signs are true. One Juno I'dth next, the hoard prob ahly will dip a natural death, sim ply because the Democrats of the hniiRe will refuse to appropriate 'for its further continuance. According to its friends, the fariiT hoard, a non-partisan 'body, has done noble work and has well expended the thousands made available lor it r, use. Democratic economists, how ever, are unable to see Wherein the hoard is worth the two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars per an num lor its maintenance. In addi tion, tiie Democrats, who are now to have the upper hand in the house., do not believe In the aid of outside agencies in the framing of the tariff legislation. During the closing days of the sixty-first congress an effort was made to make the. tariff board ; per manent -luoUtuUou. If the law had passed, the life of the board, atTea,si for a number of year?, would nave been nssured. The Fitzgerald fili buster in the house killed the per manent tariff board bill, so now th Democrats have only to refuse to appropriate for the board in order abolish it. No repeal ot a law is necessary. It takes money to run any hr.-inc'i of the government and the members and clerks of the board will .hardly pursue their labors merely for love of Uncle Snm. With their salaries stopped and with no expense money. there will remain nothing for -the board to do except dose its office and go out of existence. The five members of the board draw annual salaries of $7.,"00 each In addition there are several hun dred clerks and special field agents on the pay rolls. The present out look is that each attache 'of the board will be oat of work on June 30tii the chances being, however that many of them will be shifted to oth er departments. It became known definitely ;i few days ago that the Democratic house would refuse to appropriate for Hk continuance of the board when it came to make up the sundry civil ap propriation hill for tiie fiscal year 'Of 151 S. The board has barely enough money to continue its work -for the present fiscal year, and probably will preclieally have to cease its labor as soon as the report on the cotton industry Is complete. This report is now in course of .preparation, and (Continued on Page Three.) MAY fXHUI BODY OF JAMES LLOYD If further examinations of wit nesses In the matter of the r.iys terious death of James Uoyd seem to warrant It, Police Justice Walter L. Watson and Solicitor Herbert K .Norn will .have the body of Lloyd disinterred and the stomach examine d for traces of poison. Tally Dam phier did not tell the coroner all the flirts concerning Lloyd's death, but some of these leaked out In police court wnlle a larceny case was being tried. The circumstances were so unusual, that an investigation -vas ithnmrht. advisable and Chief H'.ell and his officers at once got busy. The officers will examine witnesses to day and tomorrow. Lloyd's body was buried at Gary m Mr, C. B. Barbour, the police man wounded in the shouldor buu- dav afternoon, lias so much lmprov ed that he expects to leave Rex Moo pltal today.
