Greensboro, Jan. 1 1 To answer a waVrant alleging the embezzlement of $30,000 Frank Wineskie, man ager and director of the High Point branch of tho Standard Mirror and Pittsburg Plate Glass company, came here at noon today .v He was arrest ed by Deputy Sheriff John Weather ly in'hls High Point office 'ate ycs terday afternoon and immediately af terwards, gave bond, of !p1o,0O( ior his appearance this afternoon at. .1 o'clock before Justice , of the l'oace D. M. Collins. Indicating the protn irtenco and confidence in whicit the accused is held such names as Mayor Fred N. Tate, A. K. Tate, Dr. W. C. Pradshaw, J. E. Matlh, R. If. Wheeler and other substantial citi zens of High Point, were signed to the bond. A large crowd is here for the hearing, which It is expected will be .brief, it being undcrm ood that counsel for the defendiiiu will waive preliminary hearing and wage their fight on 1 j as to the amount of bail. . The warrant for Winenski was ! tilled by Justice Collins yesterday af ternoon at the installed of Frank Mc.Knight, president of the Standard Mirror company and who, wiili t.wo directors in the company, came here several diiys ago to -complete-' the in vesiigation. It was immediately placed in the hands of deputy Woath erly and ho went to High Point in an automobile. Previous to bis ar rival Winenskie had been notified and he took his arrest. Calmly. Friends ..quickly gathered and ar rangements for bail 'were made by telephone, Roberson and Harnett act ing in a legal capacity for Mr. Win enskie and conferring by 'phone with (1. S. Rradshaw, counsel fot the pio? ecution and justice Collins. In a statement to friends im mediately after his arrest Winnnski Is alleged to have declared that the prosecution was a malicious one and that it was precipitated at tills time because it. was understood that the stockholders of the company which he represents were to meet next Mon days' oud elevate him to a position which President McKnight did hoi approve. It is claimed by officers of the company that detectives in their employ have traced numerous instances where Winenski made such sales with re quests that purchasers maek checks payable to himi Such checks were applied to his personal use and it is alleged no accounts of same were ever made to the company. The sys tem he employed in practising such frauds as are alleged would not be revealed hy counsel, though they de clare the evidence they will intro duce is of a very positive nature. It is further declared as an im portant fact that during his seven years at High Point Winenskie baB made investments which exceed his salary and commissions during that period notwithstanding he has lived iu apparently comfortable and lux urious if ,irot extravagant ways. The arrest precipitated a sensa tion in High Point, Vhere Winenskie was prominent in both business and social circles and considered amor.g the progressive and substantial cit izens of the community. He went ;o High Point in 1 003 as manager of the High Point branch of the Stand ard Mirror company and Pittsburg Plate Class company, the branch jt.t having been established. " A premium of $1.00 w ill lie of fered -for the bent loaf of bread, baked and exhibited by a girl or woman living on a farm; also for 'be best live ears or corn a premium of $1.00. However, the corn to get the premium must possess merits and points of excellence. We heard a gentleman say a few days ago that he had at least, twenty bales of cotton remaining in th held, and that he did nor expect to be able to get it out, before time to begin another crop. This genii man said that many of his neighbors had much cotton in the fields also. There are also many peanuts yet to be threshed out all over this com munity. Xo doubt because of the fact that much cotton vll be lost because of the inability to get it picked out, and the prevailing low prices, many farmers will considerably reduc their acreage this year.
