With snow falling during the early hours nud '.with the mercury 13 degrees above zero, Raleigh busi ness and. workingmen faced what soemod destiried to be one of, the most dlBagreenble days : in many years. A chill wind from the north east miwtfc the snow and cold even more disagreeable and added to the discomfort, of man and animal. The weather bureau has received reports from all the stations about the slate and these are no more cheering than the news hi Haloigh. The appeal of the governing board of the Associated Charities hi The Times last evening brought, results today. Many checks and bills came pouring In to relieve tho distress and fiuifoving of the unfortunate: in Hal- olga. Superintendent Stephenson wis kept busy answering telephone ca'ls, the ladles of tho association phoning him of people In need of 'woodland clothing, r.uslness men on their Way to work stopped in for a few min utes, left checks and promised cloth ing. Hut Ihe supply was by ho means equal to the domiand. The Methodist Orphanage sent in today a lot of cloaks and wraps,, the little orphans sharing with other un fortunates the things that they could dispose with. Si. Mary's School .con tributed a check for $1.".4f and sent some warm, clean blankets. These were voluntary gifts of tho girls. A well-known doctor brought some Mils from his wife and left a live dollar gold piece as bis contribution In the present time of need. Giving and Receiving. Superintendent Stephenson was today bending his energies townrd nrovldlne every family with wood nnd It was bis hope that nobody in Jtaleigh would be without fire to morrow. The superintendent was looking nt both sides of HU tortiv us ho rarely beholds them. The poor and needy were appealing as they seldom do, and the good people of Raleigh were responding whharheor ftilnosg that makes plad the Hearts of altrustlc persons. The distress of the needy served to show that the more fortunate In Raleigh arc not living for themselves, but living for tliolr fellows. Such a spirit, so worthy of emulation, makes one glaj that lie Is a resident of such a city whero the more able contribute of tfcelr earnings to those who through rbo misfortune aro unable to pro ride for themselves the bare neces sities of life. Temperature 4,'uIIk. During the morning the tempera tare continued to fall. Mr. L. A. ' Denson, section director of the weather bureaus of North Carolina, reported IS degrees at 8 o'clock and ulna decrees nt 11 o'clock, with In dications that the mercury would continue to tumble. Snow will con tlnue to fall this afternoon and to- jiJght, with fair weather tomorrow, and the weather should begin moder ating Monday. Zero Tonight. Zero .weather or a temperature slightly above is indicated for to night. It may bo four or, Ave de grees. 'and it may fall to zero or con below. Already the low ten perature record has boon approach ed anil it would require little, more pressure to shove tiio mercury down to a point ns low as it was Febru ary 1 I, .ISO!), when it. was' two de grees below zero. Tomorrow, Janu ary 11, may be the day that will witness a now record,- but it is most fervently hoped thai it '-will not. Snow in Macon. As far "south :.s Macon, Cm., it was snowing today. The snow has not reached Florida and the people in that state aro not suffering from Intense cold, but they may be .-affected. In Washington, . Haltmore, Now York and other cities along the Atlantic coast zero temperatures wore reported. From 'Chicago .-west tho weather is-moderating, but thb does not, happen to. be-'the case from that point east. v The lowest temperature-reported today was at ll:-3i), when the. mer cury, registered, s -dogivoR nnovi. soro." IS. tlegrres Later today the nierctii'y will -agHin begin' falling and the coldest, temper ature, will come lonivht or t-oinnrniw What the Orphans Did Col. Fred A. Olds has writ tea tin following in regard to the c.ontriliu tioii of the children of the Methodist orphanage: " Beyond any nuest ion the -ver; finest thing done during all the hi; ter weather was the gift, today to the poor of Raleigh, made by tin inmates of the Methodist Orphanage hern. 'They had read the appall made in The Times for aid for ill poor and this morning, amid till the bustle at tho office of the Associated Charitlosv there was joy indeed and full-appreciation of the thoughtful ness when the orphanage -wagon ap peared, driven by a couple of col ored boys, who hrougtfi in twenty five wraps. A Rig diecr. "The orphanage people had taken count on what, they had and found that those wore to spare, and ther was ii big cheer by the children when Superintendent Colo told them wh'il wis going to be done with this mm it needed (dot hin g. The dear child! at the orphanage have been usc.l to being provided for themselves, hut here was something else; namely, tn provide for others. They were, quirk to appreciate and realize the menu ings of it. They now''-understand the joy of giving and of maklnj others bamiv. as. they have been made happy themselves. 'Supt. Colo of the orphanage, til ways kiud-hearted and tlioughCul made himself a special contribution to the Associated Charities which isven gratefully appreciated. It is a bll ter day, when even thoso well-wrap .1 r.,i i-'hitt nt the unntimtllv severe weather: the worst since Fcft- rnary, lS!ii. Hauling Wood. "Figure to yourself how the poor feel and think of the tremendous responsibility which rests upon tho Associated Charities, -which is yi after all merely the exponent of Raleigh's fine feeling and regard foi the less fortunate. Every morning tit 8 o'clock Supt. Stephenson is at his post at the office and from that time until night comes there Is no let-tin in the work. ''.Yesterday 5" persons were furnished fuel, and be sides many were supplied with food clothing and bedding. It Is time of stress, with no moderation In sight before Monday, but Kulelgh, which has risen to other situations, like this will do her duty this time. The city wagons were today placed at the dis posal of the Associated Charities for hauling wood. ( Coldest In Klght Year. New York, Jan. 13. New Vork experienced the coldest day In eight years. The mercury "was 3 degrees below zero. --"Many persons suffering from exposure were taken to the hospitals. Some points in New Jer sey registered 7 below.
