That the proposed merger of the Jefferson Standard and Greensboro Life Insurance Company will not be accomplished without a legal battle was made evident today, when Mr. James II. I'ou, a policyholder, ad dressed an open letter to the ollicers of the Kalcigh company making in quiry as to the scheme of the merger ami declaring that an injunc tion would be Issued In case the consolidation were effected by means as reported to him. In his letter 1o the Jefferson Standard Mr. I'ou said he was speakin" for himself and other policyholders and asked to know if his information as to the plan of consolidation was correct. Mr. Poll's Letter. Mr. Poll's letter is as follows: Raleigh, N. C, Mav 0, 1 !!::. Jefferson Standard I. lie Insurance . Company, V : Raleigh, N. ('. tientletuen: I Bee from the papers that a merger, consolidation, or some change by whatever name properly called, is in contemplation, where by the Jefferson Standard Life In surance Company is to be consolidat ed with some other company, taking over a large amount of the other company's liabilities and policies; and, ut the Banie time, withdraw from Its treasury a ' large stun of money, reported on the streets to be three hundred and seventy-five thousand $375,0110.00 ) dollars, and pay the same to your stockholders, reducing by that amount the secur ity behind your policies of insurance, and adding immensely to the li ability of your company. As to Promises. I am a policyholder in your com pany; mid 1 bought a high price policy, on which 1 pay more than two hundred and forty ($240.00) dollars a year, which your company represented would not only be paid In full, but would participate in the profits of the company. To assure me that the company was ab solutely safe you represented that ; your company was a legal reserve company, holding a certain propor tion of the premium money; and , also that there was at the time I took - out tny policy five hundred thousand ($500,000.00) dollars paid Into the company; one-half stock and one-half surplus, which was to forever remain as security to the policyholders against any eventu ally whatsoever. Your advertise- . nient stated In bold type that the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company was "the strongest In the world for the south and the strong est in the south for the world." I never knew exactly what thin meant; but I supposed it meant .that there was a larger amount of money. In addlton to the legal reserve, for the security of the policyholders than in any other southern company. Ah to Withdrawal. I now understand that It Is pro posed to withdraw a large amount of tills money, pay it back to your stockholders and leave the policy holders dependent upon the legal re serve; and that, in addition to this, you are to lump with the present policies you carry a large amount of lusurauce written by another com pany -under another system.
