And what is- there in the charac ter and standing of Major Caldwell, which should exempt ram from the penalty of the law ? Shall a poor devil be sent to i ail for shooting his fellow being, and Maj. Caldwell be exempted from that unpleasant penalty? Who ever thought 01 interposing to prevent the former from being carried to, jail, or of offering him a public dinner ? 1 rue Maj. Caldwell is a man or high character, and a Senator in the State Legislature : But these are only reasons why he should respect the laws which he himself helped to make j "and notreasons.why he should be exempted from their operation. For ourself, we respect the Judge who per formed his duty, without respect to persons.
