Prophecy about being Realized.

large a number as a needless expense ; and
referred to a similar number of the reports
of the select commjtte of the Senate5 on the
Post Office, that were printed some years
before, which Jis colleague, Mr. Wright,
saiil were! used in his part of the State for
wadding to cannon fired in celebrating
Jackson victories.
Mr. TaJlmadge predicted that these re

Titles. Whenever we see the prefix of
" Honorable" to such names as Benton,
Kendall, &c. otrr deep-rooted aversion to
the use of these honorary and unmeaning
appellatives is still more firmly fixed. Gen.
Charles Lee spoke like a republican, and a
man of sense also, when, in a letter to Pat
rick Henry, then Governor of Virginia, he
said: " For my own part, I would as lief
they would put ratsbane in my mouth, as
" the excellency," with which I am cram
med. How much more true dignity was
there in the simplicity of address among the
Romans : Marcus Tullius Cicero, Decimo
Bruto Imperatpri, or Caius Marcello Con
suli, than to the honorable John Doodle.'
My objections are perhaps trivial and whim
sical: but, for my soul, I oannot help stat
ing them. If, therefore, I should address a
letter to you, without the excellency tack
ed, you must not esteem it a mark of per
sonal or official disrespect, but the reverse."
Lynchburg Virginian.
Homicide. There was a dispute, on the
30th ult, at Greenville, Mo., between
John Davenport and Lemuel G. Alexander,
about a horse race. After the interchange
of a few words, Alexander shot Davenport,
killing him on the spot. He then fled,
.and 'it is supposed that he was furnished
with a horse and money to enable him to
escape. It was believed that he would go
to Carlisle, Pa. ''
The trial for murder in Baltimore. In
the case of William Stewart, on trial for the
murder of hi3 father, the evidence and
pleadings were brought to a close on Satur
day, the 27th ult. and the jury, on Sun
day evening, brought ina verdict of mur
der in the second degree. The testimony
was altogether circumstantial and exceed
ingly voluminous, occupying seven or eight
columns of, the Baltimore papers. The
motive of the murderer appears to have
been impatience to come into possession of
a small estate which his father had be
queathed to him by a will, executed only a
few weeks before the "murder, which was
found in his possession when he was ar
rested. The trial has naturally excited
great interest in Baltimore.
Credit is the poor man's lever, by which
he can and does compete with the rich cap
talist, upon a footing with him. The Sub
Treasury scheme will have a direct ten
dency to destroy the opportunities of the
poor and create a monoply of the rich who
need no credit.
