He seized the man and dragged him to a police station. letter he visited the man in prison, talked with him in such a manly, Christian way that the man was converted, and is now an exemplary church member in the West. That is a type of muscular Christianity worth coveting. First satisfy justice, then display love Congregattonalist. The Gethumane Baptist Church was organized in 18S6 in Havana with only three members. This was the first evanegelical organization in the Island of Cuba. Rev. Albert J. Diazo, who had lied from Havana as an exile, was conuerted in New York, returned to Cuba, and as the fruits of his labors the membership of his church is now 1917. Five other churches have been organized with 21 preaching matrons with 4 ordained ministers and 17 mis sionaries. All the services in the churches and Sabbath-schools are con ducted in the Spanish language. The Rev. T. De Witt Taimages new tabemacle at the corner of Green and Clinton avenues, was opened to his congregation and the public for the first time Sunday last. The taber nacle's dimensions are 200 feet long by 11S wide, and it is Romanesque in its style of architecture. It is built of brick and stone. The interior of the church has two galleries and will scat 5500 persons. The big organ cost $30,000. Up to date the total cast of the church is $410,000, and it will re quire $40,000 more to complete it. Every court in Philadelphia is opened with the following proclamation, pro nounced by the Clerk: "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez, all persons who stand bound by recognizance, or who have otherwise to do before the Honorable the Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the county of Philadelphia, may at present appear and they shall be heard. And may Gcxl save the Commonwealth and the honorable Court.'" This is a dis tinct recognition of Almighty God, and an invocation of His blessing a prayer, therefor, albeit a brief one. St a ndai a of the Cross. The Wesley ans t:nd Congregation alists of London, are relieving the ou: cast poor of the metropolis! by thous ands. In one week the London Congre gational Union gave shelter to 3.447 homeless beings, m;t of them fn.-m the rural districts, for ''over a ihird of the population were not born within its bounds.1" The "shelter v halls give "a little coffee and a few buns to the most needy " on Sunday, and then the gospel i3 preached to these people, who never enter churches in the fame halls where sleep and food have been a fforded . Iowa State Register. Preaching a trial sermon in presence of an audience of only two persons, must in any case be a trial to one's nerves, but especially so when the two happen to be the Archbishop of Canter bury, Dr. Tait, and Dean Stanley. We read of such an unfortunate young "candidate for priest's orders" so preaching in that rather awful pres ence. In his confusion he stampered out, as he began, " will divide my congregation into two the converted and the unconverted." Dr. Tait inter rupted him with: "I think, sir, as there are only two of us, j-ou had bet ter -aay which is which." Chicago Staiidatd. The American Bnj.ti.st Year Bxk for 1S01 gives the number of regular Baptists as 3,104,227, a net gain for the year of 94, ISO, or tin oe per cent.
