Harris, died in Raleigh Thursday morning and brought to Oxford for inter ment. Mrs. Harris is sister of Mis. S.W. Cooper. He is one of our wide-awake young farmers, but he is sadly in need of a partner to comfort him on life's journej He had the mis fortune to lose a good mule during the past week. We heard a successful farmers re mark the other day that the cause of times leing so hard with the farmers was due to the fact that things once made at home are now bought. If we were to adopt some of the old rules doubtless our farmers would be happy and prosperous. Capt. W. A. Bobbitt left yesterday for Western Carolina In the interest of the Oxford Land, Improvement and Man ufacturing Company. Rev. Josept Renne, occupied the pul pit at the Presbyterian church Sunday last and preached a most able sermon to the great delight of the large congrega tion present. We learn that Mr. Henry Feild has had the good luck to be awarded the contract for building the Long warehouse at Roxboro. Mr. Feild is a good work man and will no doubt fully sustain his reputation in the erection of this house. Dr. T. B. Kingsbury, of the Messen ger, has been invited to deliver a speech in reply to the toast to the press, at the banquet of the Alumni Association at Chapel Hill; a fitting compliment to the Gamaliel of the press of North Carolina Clinton Caucasian. We are pleased to learn that arrange ments are being made to offer extra in ducements to get some enterprises of ample capital to remove to Oxford. Let them come and they will meet with a royal welcome by the citizens of Oxford and Granyille county. We learn that the loss sustained by Mr. E. G. Morris, of Wilton, by the burn ing of his barn and stables last week will be nearly $1000. Besides losing a fine horse and colt, 6JS bushels of wheat, all his farming utensils, wagon, carriage, buggy and harness were all destroyed. Richmond Tobacco Commission Mer chants were well represented on our breaks Thursday by the following clever gentlemen: J. AV. Parkinson, mauager of the T. C. Williams Tobacco Company; L. M. Griffin, of the firm of L. M. Griflln & Co., and W. T. Carrington, of the firm of W. T. Carrington & Co. Mr. W. A. Davis left yesterday for Winston in the interest of the Oxford Land Improvment and Manufacturing Company, and Mr. J. B. Booth is on a like j mission to .Lynchburg, Va. The stock continues to be sold in almost every sec tion of N. C. It is real y on the biggest boom of any enterprise ever started in the State. It is a settled fact that a big man ufacturing enterprise will be established on this splendid property. It was our pleasure to meet Mr. E. K.Howard, of Hargrove, in town Satur day. He informs us that Hargrove lias become a regular established postoffiee. We congratulate the good people of this section upon having this long needed con venience. We hope our friends in that portion of the county will get up a bin- campaign club. We wiil send the Pub lic Ledger from the 1st of June to the 15th of November for 50 cents. Sunday was a bright beautiful day, and a large congregation attended the Metho dist Church at 11 o'clock to take part in the services devoted to the children of the Sunday School. The edifice was pro fusely decorated with flowers and ever greens. On each side of the pulpit was a hanging basket full of rare roses inter twined with ferns, and on the wall in rear of the pulpit inscribed in letters con structed of box was "Suffer little children to come unto me." The walls of the church were adorned in tasteful lettering: Faith, Love, Truth, Hope, Trust, Joy, Charity, with a Cross and Anchor, sug gestive of the text that "Upon this rock&I build mv church and th fro trie Vtkll v VJ. shall not prevail against it." Mr. John W. Hays, Superintendent of the Sunday School, opened the services by announcing the hymn "Let them come to me," which was nicely sung by four little ffirls. After a touching prayer by Rev. W. L. Cuninggim, Mr. Hays called upon Miss Hazel Overby, a bright charming little girl who stood up in a chair and repeated "God's eye is upon you," in a sweet clear voice. Rev. W. L. Cuninggim, the beloved and honored pastor, addressed the chil dren in his usual plain and pleasing man ner.
