He is certainly remarkably well preserved as he plows every day and steps along with the alacraty of a man of 40. Before a man is married anf' he has asked the fatal question, he sometimes has to beg her to break through her shyness and only give him one little word. But he never has occasion to beg for a wTord sfter marriage. In looking for contrasts between Wash ington's time and the present let us not forget that in his day the office sought the man, while in ours usually ihe man places himself in t he hands of his friends, secretly slips a call in a paper signed "many voters" demanding that he come forward and sacrifice himself for the country's good, and otherwise works night and day till he either runs the poor, dis tracted office to earth on election night or gets beaten by the other man. Things will change in a hundred years. A Sate Investment Is one which is guaranteed to bring you satisfactory results, or in case of failure a. return of purchase price. Trial bot tles free at J. G. Hall's Drugstore, Tlie M ater Works Question. A meeting of the citizens of Oxford is called at the Court House to night to con sider the question of establishing water works in our town. It is true water works would be a great advantage to Ox ford in many respects, and we are really willing to do anything that would in the least tf-nd to the upbuilding of our beauti ful town, but we would lemind the people that such an improvement must not be secured at the expense of the people at la"ge by taxation. Our town is now so heavily taxed that it is hard for the peo ple to meet them which is almost daily demonstrated in front of the court house, by sales of lands for failure ti pay enor mous taxes. It is a well known fact that some of our people have to deprive them selves of the necessary of life in order to meet the heay burdens placed upon them. If you increase the taxes a large number of good people will not locate pmong us, as high taxes is a serious draw back to any town. We would be glad to have waterworks, but not by taxation just at this time, and we trust our citizens will not entertain a proposition at such a cost as we have a!l we can BtPid up under at present. Re member we have a heay railroad and market house tax, that is bound to be paid. In speaking of the market house, we would like to suggest if it would not be possible to transfer that piece of property as a payment for a system of water works. How does this idea strike jou? It is true some of orr wealthy citizens may endorse the movement of water works, because they are able to stand more tax, while the masses of our com munity are unable to meet the present high taxes. We array ourselves against more taxation and feel that in so doing we voice the sentiment of a majority of our people. If there is no other way of getting the water works except by levying a tax, postpone this inprovement until the present onerous taxes aie decreased. Iiy tlie celebrated Panucoa Water sold in Oxford by Davis, Thomas & Co., Fur man & Hays, S. S. Haithcock & Co., and .I.G.Hall. We Stick to our Man. Some of our people pre rather previous in nominating a candidate for Governor, as the election is a long way off. We have no objection to Mr. J. S. Cpt, and think he would make a good Governor, but we have a man whose headquprters is anywhere in N. C. and feels at home in the humblest house-hold from the Moun tains' to sea shore. He possesses a great big charitable heart, as well as berng one of the brainiest men in the Slate and we rise f) om our old split bottom chair and nominate the noble Dr. B. F. D-.on, the father of tbe Orphans, a5 the mgn above all others most suitable to be ne.-i; Gov ernor of the Old Not h State. He can do as much r.s any man to foster and en courpge every enterprise that will ad vance the interest of our people. Buy tlie Excelsior Cook Stove, best ia use, at J. F. Edwards'.
