One of the speakers at the Repub lican Convention pitched into the last legislature because "the South Caroline election law had been in troduced and. a substitute adopted for it known as the Payne Bill." And so the legislature was soundly berated, not for what it had done but rather for something it had not done. The election law on our statute books, is a very excellent one. It tends to security against fraudulent voting. Only those who are not opposed to fraudulent voting will object to that. OXFOKI), N. C SEPT. 2, 1890. DEMOCRATIC TICKET. Fifteen thousand Illinois farmers cheering Hon. Roger Q. Mills are rather a denial of the statement that farmers do not favor tariff reform. Only think of it. pearly 37,000,- 000 of babies are born every year or seventy a minute. No wonder people get rich out of baby carriages and toys. The literary "fellers" don't impress Congressmen as good politicians. They buttonhole members to vote for the eopjuight bill before they have had their morning cocktail. Then the farmers got angry and swore by their plough handles that they would down these monopolies and the robber tariff that makes them poorer, and any one who fancies that these men will be whipped back into the old high-tariff traces will find himself badly mistaken. They are after monopolies of all kinds. They don't propose to divide their crops equally and give one-half to the railroad and the other half to the millionaire manufacturers of the East. They are in earnest. They are m rebellion. Omaha World-Herald. Utterly tired out and brutalized by Reed's dogmatism, the House actu ally welcomed the disgraceful scenes of 27th, beginning with Cannon's vulgarity and ending with the fisti cuffs between Wilson and Beckwith, as affording a moment's brutal amusement. But this time all the members must be utterly ashamed of themsolyes. But the stigma has been fastened on them. No wonder Congress is tired of the long session, of dictatorship, of divided counsels and of abortive legislative. But the country is even more tired of Con gress. Its members are doing no good in Washington. They should go home. The most sensible speech made in the Uuited States Senate during this session must be credited to Senator Quay. During a pause in the pro longed and fruitless talk which has been consuming the time of that body and correspondingly disgusting the country, Mr. Quay arose in his place and said: "If no Senator desires to speak, I would like to vote." To vote, and not to talk, is what Senators and Representatives are sent to Washing ton for, but thus far it has been pretty much all talk and little voting. AH the talk on the tariff has not changed a single vote, while the busi ness interests of the country are jeopardized by the delajT in import ant legislation. The Farmers' Alliance and Knights of Labor of Atchison, Kas., met as the Peoples' Convention Aug.. 20 and nominated three Democrats and one Republican for the county offices, and one Demosrat and one Republi can for the Legislature. The Con vention unanimously adoDted the St. Louis plat farm, and the following 1 . 1 f A' T resolution in auuuion: jvewmvu, That it is the sense of this Conven tion the nominees for the Legisla ture stand pledged not to vote for the return of John J. Mr. Plumb roared gently as a em.ViTiff dove when the Force bill was laid in its little grave. Fifteen thousand people, of whom a large majority were farmers, gathered at Greenup, 111., Aug. 2fith, to hear an address by Congressman Mills, of Texas, on the tariff question. Previous to the address the congress man held a reception of an hour's duration in the hotel parlors. In his sneech Mr. Mills did not confine his remarks to the tariff alone, but found time to exrn-ess his opinion on the Lodge Force bill, which he charac terized as one of the most atrocious and malisrnant nieces of sectional legislation that had been attempt ed since the war, and clearly showed that it is a measure devised by a decavinsr political partv to assure them of continued control by sup n i it i il ii pressing a tree Dauot in me ooutnern States. The farmers cheered until thev were hoarse when Mr. Mills concluded. has B. Ber- STATE POLITICS. Grad3, in the third district, as yet no opposition. In the first district, W. A. Branch has to beat Claude M. nard. Capt. Williams has two competi tors, Brower and a colored man named Moore. Capt. Bunn has to contend with Mr. Meacham, Mr. Mclver and per haps Tonnoffski. Hon. W. H-. H. Cowles was re nominated for Congress in the eighth district on the 147th ballot. A large number of negroes in the Second District hate Cheatham and hope Simmons will be put up by the Democrats. They say he can beat Cheatham. The "bosses" have made up. Mott and Eaves have shaken hands and are on good terms. Eaves is to be again chairman of the Republican State Executive Committee. The Ninth District Convention unanimously adopted the following : Resolved, That the Democratic party of the Ninth Congressional District endorse the Hon. Z. B. Vance as his own successor for the United States Senate. The Republican Congressional con vention of the 4th district met again and nominated by acclamation Prof. Al ex Mclyer, of Chatham, as the Republican candidate for Congress. He is an old teacher and a life-long Republican. Rev D. P. Meacham, of Wake, is out as a Congressional candidate in the Raleigh District as a Democrat. He is an Alliance man, and hopes to get Alliance votes, evidently, and to avail himself of any Alliance feeling against Bunn. The prohibition county conven tion Wake was held Saturday and nominated S. M. Parish, Esq., for the Senate, and A, H. Yerby, Sion Holleman, W. W. Johnson and C. N. Hunter (col.) for the House. The platform favors the sub-treasury bill. At the Congressional Convention for the 9th district, held at Asheville, Vance was sti-ongest on the first bal lot. Johnston withdrew on the eleventh, and W. T. Crawford, of Haywood county, was nominated on the fourteenth ballot, receiving 1G1 votes. Mr. R. N. Hall, Jr., nominee for the legislature from Orange, is out in a card saying that he will most cheerfully vote Senator Vance. He says 'I regard the able fight that Senator Vance is now making on the tariff bill as one that will benefit all classes of our people." It is probable that Congress will be able to adjourn early in October, but hints are thrown out that the President may call Congress in ex traordinary session in November, im mediately after the election, to give jidditional time for the consideration of the Force Election bill.
