Grant Moss, colored, who stole a gun from the store of Mr. J. Red Jim Crews, as he is familiarly called, will make it warm for Big Chief before the campaign is over. He is right after his scalp and is followed by true Democratic warrors, who are determined to capture the Big Chief of the black wigwam. Just twenty negroes and two white men met the Big Chief at Dement on Monday. A cold reception. Rufua Amis tried very hard to get up a yell among the tribe by telling them he was infavor of the Force Bill, and in the-course of his remarks tounched up the Election Laws. The Irwin Place which has become go popular with the traveling public was closed on Monday last, much to the regret of our community. Mrs. Cooper and Miss Carrie Mitchell, will in a few days take their departure for Ashville and will take charge of a hotel in that progressive city. We n k every Democrat in Granville if he is gc ing to stand idly by and allow a man to be ele-tcd clerk who left the party because he could not get an office. We believe not and will see that the true, thetiied, and faithful exponent of true Democratic principles, Buck Babbitt re tires the lengthy hero to the everlasting shades of Bowlings Mountain. ! The crowd is the largest ever known. Large attendance from Oxford and Gran, ville county. Rawl's store has been removed across the street in the store next to Cooper Bank. He has a dandy trio behind the counters, they are nearly all the same size, short and round. McCullen, is hard to beat as a salesman and is genial and clever. Thaxton looks like he fells good all the time, and smiles all over when he sells a pair of Rawl's best shoes. Rawls the brother of the proprietor, is a quiet easy going gentleman and is ever ready to supply the wants of all who are in search of goods at low prices. No Mistake TMh Time. The most important event of late oc currence (to some at least) was the mar riage of bur esteemed friend Mr. J. T. Rogers, of the firm of Lyon & Rodgers, to Miss Mollie Mangum, one of Brassfield township's most attractive young ladies. The ceremony which was short, pointed and impressive, was performed by Rev. Jas. Atkinson, assisted by Rev. M. L Winston in the presence of many friends, at the residence of the brides father, Mr. W. J. Mangum, after which the happy couple followed by a large number of friends made their way to Lyons' station where they took the North bound train for Richmond. May the entire journey of life be as pleasant as from Mr. Man gum's to Lyons, God ever being their guide. Now Johnnie can't you help Sam off? Oh, never mind though, for some say " what is to be will be if it never is." Tobacco seems not to be so good as was once thought, but the quantity seems plentiful, and much is being carried from around us to Durham, Henderson ami Oxford, but Oxford has to labor under the disadvantage of our railroad not touching her, which cuts off some and 1 doubt not a great deal of the weed from you. We regret to learn that we are to lose one of our best neighbors, Mr. Wm. Mitchell, but our loss will be your gain ; we understand he is going to Oxford. We need say nothing to these, nor the good people of Oxford, about what a man he Is ; they know him. We are glad to say our little town is still on the upward road, and business good. A new store and dwelling is soon to be erected, and we hear some talk of a buggy and wagon factory. May it be and that soon. We hear no complaint from any quar ter of dull times, except from the doc tors. They say it is " distressingly heal thy." We do not wish them any harm but if healthy years cause it may they see harder times yet. S. REDOAK, NASH COUNTY, ITEMS. Mr. Willis Ward'has been ill several days. Mr. W. T. Royster, Esq., a mem ber of the bar and one of Oxford's mot promising and worthy young gentleme;A with a bright future before him would have the honor of winning the hand of one of Oxford's most charming young ladies Miss Mamie Hobgood. Miss Hob good is a popular young lady much adj--mired and beloved by her acquantancea of both sexes. She is bright, amiable, inj telligent and of genial manners and sweej disposition. And as Mr. Royster is au accomplished and popular gentleman it $ natural that their hosts of friends shoultjl have felt a liveiy interest in an event per sonal to themselves of such transcendent importance in connection with their fUif ture destiny. The consequence was that a large eor course of persons assembled at the Bap tist Church on Wednesday at 10ock;k to witness the marriage rites which was performed in a graceful and approprate sti'le by the Rev. John S. Hardaway. '"he organ was presided, over by Mrs. ThosJ D. DEMOCRATIC FIRES ARE BI RMSO BRIGHTLY 1H R AX VIE I.E. Commencement of Campaign Next Monday Turn Out Everybody The People Disgusted with High Tariff and Foree Bills. This is an era in the hiscory of the Dem ocratic party requiring united and prompt action. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." The merchants of Oxford and all over the country by reason of the pas sage of the tariff bill by a Republican Congress have been notified that many ot the necessaries of life that the poor peo ple are compelled to use have been put up in price. It is a down right shame, it is worse than robbery, as a gentleman ex pressed it the other day "it i3 highway robbery" to put tariff taxes on the poor people of the country when the million aires are comparatively free from taxa tion. Rally, Rally , Democrats, your free dom and your liberities are at stake ! The thing has come right home to the people, and they are getting mad at, the meanness of the Republican party in tax ing them so heavily without cause. And then there is the infamous Force Bill which decent Republicans general will not support, yet Capt. Rufus Amis has the temerity to declare on the stump around the county that he is in favor of this odi dious measure. So the Democrats are waking up to rebuke the wicked Repub lican Party and their horrid measures, and we are glad to see the people after sleep ing for a good while becoming aroused and taking steps for a grand and glorious Democratic victory in Granville. Let all dissensions now be stopped and the people harmonize as one man for the safety of the country. Please take notice of the following ap. pointments for public speaking in Gra- -ville. Rally every body, and let us put off l,e yoke of bondage and oppression. Ren Brower Knocked Down. Poor Brower is getting it on all sides. Baldy Willirus has gotten him badly hacked, and when he struck Wentworth, he county seat of Rockinghsm, one of his brother Republicans gave him a beat ing in old fashioned syle. A special from Reidsville to the Rich mond Times of the 11th inst. says : At the court house in Wentworth to-day, an exciting personal .conflict occured b. -tween Congressman Brower and Joseph Bradfield, a well-known coi respondent and politician, in which Brower came out second best receiving an ugly gash in the face from Mr. Bradfield's fist. The trouble grew out of an article in the Reidsville Review, in which charges of notorious immorality were preferred against Brower. Brower began his speech by denying the charge and denouncing Mr. Bradfield as the author of the allegation. Upon which Bradfield arose and struck Brower in the face, bringing the blood. The parties were separatea quiokly or else the diffi culty might have resulted seriously for Brower. Tried to Wreck Excursion Train. The fiends are at their devilment again, trying to usher human souls into eternity without warning. The excursion train from Raleigh Tuesday night came in con tact with an immense piece of timber just this side of Stems. The engine struck it with such force as to knock it clear off the track, and thus saved the lives of the passengers on board. It would be a blessj ing to that community and the people at large if the fiends incarnate could be apj prehended and swung up to the first tree. Indeed we are sorry that we have any body in Granville who wo ild be guilty of so dibolical a deed. Located in Oxford, We are pleased to note that Mr. Smiley has located in Oxford for the purpose of manufacturinir his Rheumatic Cure He has been selling his medicine in Gran ville fir several years and is taking the lead over other remedies in the cure of rheumatism.
