FARMERS' ALLIANCE.
'IN UNITY THERE IS STRENGTH."
Ilesolutions Adopted ly the Granville
County Alliance at the October
Meeting, 1891.
That whereas, Mr. J. T. Britt, editor of
the Public Ledger has offered space in
his paper to the Farmers' Alliance of this
county free, therefore be it
Resolved, That we accept said propo
sition and appoint Brother A. S. Peace to
control the same.
"It in Against the Constitution."
When younger than now it so
chanced that we were a candidate
on the Democratic ticket for the
Legislature. There Jived a sim
ple minded colored man in our
neighborhood who was a Re pub
lican without knowing- why.
On the day of election we met
him on his way to the polls and
asked him for his vote ''just my
name in place of the other man's
on yourticket,'' we pleaded. "You
know I am and have always been
your friend. You have lived in
the family ever since freedom and
you have never aked a favor that
you have not received.'' "I know
you are my iriend; yes sah," came
the reply with a knowing look
that would have discomfited King
Soloman. "Well then, just let me
scratch out this name and insert
mine in place of it." "No sah,
boss, no sah," came the response
with a ierk of the head and a
blink of the eyes equal to that of
a f iog eating hre. "Why not t
we enquired. il Becase iths
asrainsths the cornstitution to
scratch a ticket."
We knew it was an unconscious
color prejudice that prevented
him reciprocating favors ; and in
asmuch as he had lived so lone:
with us as to entitle him in Afri
can parlance to become one of the
family, we telt proud that he had
some excuse to give which seemed
to relieve him irom reelings of in
gratitude. But now there is no
co 'or in it ; we are all of the same
flesh and blood brothers in the
same household of political faith.
Nor are we any candidate ; only
one of many humble citizens beg
ging our leaders who are intelli
gent, refined and well-informed
about most things, but woefully
igrnorant as to the real condition
of the people, to give us some re
lief from the burdens of unjust
laws laws enacted for the benefit
of the few to the detriment of the
many. We only ask "equal rights
for all and special privileges for
none." We are answered by our
sages that they know our cause of
discomfort ; that it is from the lack
of money in circulation and by
reducing the tariff about seven
cents on the dollar's worth of im
ports, with free coinage of silver
and the repeal of the tax on btafce
banks, all will be well. We reply
the first you are unable to do, the
second you are unwilling to do,
and the third you never intend to
do. Therefore, we demand gov
ernment ownership of railroads ;
that foreigners shll not be allow
ed to own our lands ; and that we
have a sufficient amount of money
distributed by the government di
rect to the people on the sub
treasury plan.
To the first demand, the railroad
king answers, it is against the
Constitution to interfere with my
domains. To the second demand
the alien land grabber replies, it
is asrainst the constitution to in
terfere writh my rights as a Euro
ii .--it
pean investor. To tne tnira de
mand the plutocrat says, It is
against the Constitution to lend
money to the farmers; that would
break me urj m my work ot mar
iner millionaires by the thousand
ner annum and paupers by the
hundred thousand- Then the
words of all these combined to
