The fire insurance companies cancel all their, risks at Antlers, I. T., in con sequence of the threats to burn the town. The number of men seek ing office from the President has by no means diminished and the President's list of daily callers is still as large as ever. Virginia leads all the States in this respect. Mr Cleveland appointed Mr. Hannis Taylor, of Alabama to be Minister to Spain. The Senate elected the Senate officers chosen some time ago in the Democratic caucus. Their terms of office are to begin with the first day of the next ses sion or Congress. The appoint ment of Judge Lochren as Commis sioner of Pensions causes great sat isfaction to all parties, especially of the Northwest. He has a brilliant record as a soldier. A mob in Peru invade one of our Consulates, sack the building, and the Consular agent is shot in the foot. This occured while the mob was engaged in sacking a Masonic Lodge.- Tn the Federal Senate Mr. Voorhees in troduced a resolution, which was referred to the Interstate Commence Committee, reciting the decision of the Ohio courts in the engineers' strike cases and directing the com mittee to report what legislation is necessary to amend the interstate commence law so as to protect the rights of organized labor. The resolution offered by Mr. Hoar last Monday declaring it inexpedient to propose a constitutional amendment for the popular election of United States senators was taken up in the h ederal Senate, and Mr. Hoar con cluded his speech, in support of it. It was a scholarly, historical, and statesmanlike argument, and as such was listened to with profound atten tion. The three negro highway men who robbed Arron Wade near Durham not long ago, have all been captured. Secretary Grresham, under instructions of the President, has sent instructions to our Minis ter at Constantinople to take strin gent measures for bringing about a satisfactory settlement of the out rages committed by a Turkish mob on American citizens. A State bank at Sibley, Pa., closes its doors. In the indictment against ex- Sheriff Rogers, of Wake county for embezzlement, the jury renders a verdict of not guilty. The State of Nebraska votes unanimously to impeach the ex-Attorney General of that State. Reports from the Northwest show that much damage has been done by prairie fires and wind storms. The county insane asylum at Delaware, Ohio, was burn ed. No lives were lost. Rev. T. C. Tupper, rector of St. Philip's church, Atlanta, has resigned. He performed the marriage ceremony during Lent, contrary to the express orders of Bishop Nelson. This caused the resignation. At Coal Grove, Ohjo, Friday fire destroyed 50,000,000 feet of valuable lumber, besides other property to the value of $750.000. The Law and Order society of Pittsburg is indicting ed itors of Sunday newspapers by the wholesale. There is substainial opposition to the confirmation of Mr. Ecles as Conptroller of the Currency on the ground that he is entirely unfamiliar with the duties of the office. The House Com mittee on Privileges and Elections asks for a sub-committee to sit dur ing recess to investigate the contest of the seat from Kansas. The President thinks North Carolina has an overplus of candidates for foreign missions. Civil war is assuming dangerous proportions In Nebraska prairie fires destroyed everything over a track twenty-five miles long by four miles wide. The newspaper men of Pittburg, Pa., who have been indicted under the "blue laws," are going to see to it that those laws are enforced to the fullest extent against street cars, steamboats, and everything else that works on Sunday. The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland has is sued an order restricting the impor tation of fire arms and ammunition. J. E. Prince, of Norfolk, Va., was killed on a New York ferry boat. The Peruvian Government agrees to make proper amends for the affront offered one of our Con sular Agents. Secretary Carlisle has appointed Herman VanSenden, of Kentucky, to be his private Sec retary. Bronghton has endorse ments from eleven States for the position of Government printer. Nothing came of the proposition to arbitrate the World's Fair strike. The New York Assembly passes the bill abolishing the death penalty. Sixteen new cases of cholera are reported from Galicia. R n. William Coller, while asleep on the railroad track, had both legs cut on: oy train, causing his death. a FARMERS TROUBLES A A I AEEDS. In looking over the reports of some Farmers' Institutes recently we were struck with the many ob stacles which agriculturists are call ed to encounter: 1. An uncongenial or improverishod soil. 2. Bad seed. 3. Unprepitious season for planting 4. Imperfect cultivation. 5. Drought or freshet. G. Cutworms and a my riad like enemies. 7. Late and early frosts. 8, Sudden storms and winds. 9. Unfavorable time of harvest. 10. But not least, if all other obstacles are surmounted, a low and depress ed market, says the Durham Sun. It will be observed that the most of these obstacles are such as ordi nary prudence cannot prevent, and only persistent labor and much ex pense can overcome; over some they have no control. Is it to be wonder ed at, that farmers camplain of a hard lot, or that boys run away from the farm? And yet, it is upon this class that the prosperity and even the susten ance of the community largely de pend; if crops are good, business is good, or the reverse. Again, it is upon this class that the burdens of the community fall with greatest weight, for the land has taxable value and is always in sight. Should it not be the aim of legis lation to make the farmers' burdens light as possible? to aid him in ex changing his products, at fair re munerative prices, in good, honest money, to encourage our young men to stay upon the farm, and thus to aid in creating a sound and thorough basis for permanent, gen eral and growing prosperity?
