"Oh, what lovely berries, Jack," cried the young- woman, pointing- al most directly at the concealed officer "Yes," her escort returned, "but vou mustn't touch . them. There are too many officers about." The girl pouted her lips. Then sud denly a brig-lit thoug-ht struck her, and she exclaimed: "Oh, I know! Let's play Adam and Eve. You, dear Jack, will be Adam and I JiiVe. The park snail oe our g-arden of Eden. I'll pluck of the bidden fruit and give to you, and" "But suppose an officer should for- see us?" the young- man said, uneasily, glancing- about. jno policeman was in Big-lit. Reassured, he continued: "All rig-lit, Eve, g-o ahead: but didn't Adam pluck first and give to Eve?" "Un, no, vou sillv bov: oi course not!" The make-believe Eve stole over to within five feet of Officer Ryerson and, picking- a larg-e cluster of berries, took them to Adam. She placed them in the lapel of his coat and patted his cheek. Adam was alive to his oppor tunity, and imprinted a kiss on the fair cheek before him. She blushed as red as the berries Adam wore. "And now that this is your Garden of Eden, and that you, Adam and Eve, have sinned," Officer Ryerson said, as he sauntered up behind them, "the aevii aotn appear m tne snape ot a park policeman." And he waved his billy as thoug-h it were a scepter of fire. "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to come along- with me to the arsenal ana explain vo tne serg-eani; now it is that both Adam and Eve have trans gressed the rules of the park." Half way to the station house Ryer son relented. He is a sort of a wag himself. He was grinning- his broad est, and the young- people, too, while not forgetting- the seriousness of the charg-e against them, could scarce sup press their smiles. Ryerson stopped short and said: "Well, I'll let you g-o, but let me give you a piece of advice. Don't, when ever you want to play Adam and Eve, come to Central park. There are two hundred and fifty just such devils as I am lurking- about to entrap the un wary Adams and Eves. Just remem ber that, please. You may g-o." The pair overwhelmed the officer with their thanks and hurried away. WISDOM OF A HORSE. He Knows When His Master Is Loaded and Needs a Rest. There is a horse on the Mississippi coast, it would not be wise to say just where in telling- a true tale, and such a tale, for this horse has a master who WAITING FOR HIM TO "SLEEP IT OFF. often takes a drop too much, and, una ble to ride, throws himself on the ground "to sleep it off." Then the ahorse grazes around patiently until it is time to g-o home, when he arouses the man by pulling- his sleeve, makes 'him mount and carries him safely home. Subscribe to the Public Ledger ?
