Raleigh held a mass meeting last
night, and raised $5,000 towards se
curing the Baptist Female College.
The Teachers' Assembly have com
pleted arrangements to have present at
the next session in June Rev. Dr.-Tal-mage
and the great humorist Eli Per
kins. The Supreme Court ot the Unit
ed States yesterday assigned what
are known as the North Carolina
boundcases, involving the validity of
about ten million dollars worth of
bonds, for argument on the twentieth
inst. These cases have been
pending more than "a yearj the court
declining to assign them for hearing
during the last term for reason, it is
understood, that Justice Matthews was
ill and the court was nearly evenly
divided on the questions at issue.
Rev. C. L. Powell, a Baptist preach?
er, who,as an independent missionary,
went to Algiers, North Africa, from
North Carolina, has in a fit ofinsanity
murdered his youngest daughter, aged
6 'years, -by cutting her throat
with a pocket-knife. He made an at
tack on his wife, who fled and there
by saved her life. He had been in an
asylum in Algiers, but having improv
ed was allowed to go ' home, and soon
after made this murderous attack. He
is now in an asylum in Algiers. His
wife and four children are very anxious
to get back to North Carolina.
Gov. Fowle 'yesterday sfixed the day
of exec'ition of four men, appointing
the same date, February 7th, for the
execution of all of them, says the News
and Observer. These are John Wilson,
convicted of murder in Yancey coiinty
at the spring court of 18S9 ; Manly
Pankey, convicted of murder in Mont
gomery county, fall term, 1889; Sam
uel Halford and R. P. Willis, both
convicted of burglary in Rutherford
county, at Spring term, 1SS9. All
the parties took appeals to the Su
preme Court,! but the judgment in
each case was confirmed., The next
m'onth will have its full share of hang
ings in this State. In addition to the
above there are Parrish and Boyle, of
this city, and Lije Moore at Greens-
boro, who are also under .death sen
tence. '

A dispatch from Wildcat, Ark., says
that the wedding of John Ma) field and
Mrs. Sarah Rich was interrupted by'
the appearance of an officer who had
a warrant, for the arrest of the bride
groom on the charge of shooting a man
named Cook during a quarrel some
hours before. Tlie bridegroom lagged
(he officer to allow the marriage to
take place, which he did, and after
