The Oxford Lodge, I. O. O. F., No J
103, is now the banner Odd Fellows
Ledge of North Carolina. It has the
largest membership. in the State. Last
year it ranked second, the Orron, of
Wilmington, exceeding it by a small
number. The reports submitted to
the Grand Secretary January 1st, show
that the Orion Lodge has 104 mem
bers, the Oxford Lodge. 1 06 members.
The installation of the qfficers elect
ed at the previous meeting to serve for
the ensuing six months, occurred last
nifjit. The finances of the Lodge
were found to be in a most highly sat
isfactory condition.
On the third Sunday in this monrh,
the 19th inst , Rev W. L. Cuninggim
will preach, a .special sermon to the
Odd Fellows in the Opera House. The
members of the Lodge will attend in
a body in regalia. The public is cor-
dially invited to be'present.

olina Tobacco Counties. Meet Here In
Convention Tomorrow.
Representatives of the Farmers' Al
liance of twenty or more tobacco
growing counties of Virginia and
North Carolina will meet in conven
tion in the Opera House tomorrow, to
take steps to fight the recently formed
and iniquitous cigarette trust. '
Some of the delegates are already in
the city. The Virginia delegation
will arrive on this afternoon's train
from the north, and the delegates from
North Carolina will come in oh, the
'morning trains from the south and east.
At eleven o'clock a. m., public pro
ceedings will be had, to which the peo
ple generally will be admitted. Mayor
L. G. Smith will receive the visitors
and introduce) R. W. Winston, Esq.,
who will deliver an address of welcome.
Mr. J. B. Smith, of Caswell county,
N.C, District Lecturer of the Far
mers' Alliance, will ' respond. Other
speeches will be made by prominent
J
entlemen, alter which, adjournment
will be in order until after dinner.
The convention will then sit with
closed 3oors, and get down to business.
The Day. on behalf of the Oxford
people, extends the Farmers' Alliance
a hearty welcome. May they findj,
their ptay in our city pleasan t and
profiable.. May their deliberations
result in formulating a plan which will
overthrow this -gigantic monopoly, and
make of it an example .whichwill
be remembered by avaricious capitalists
for all time to come.

A special to the News- Observer,
from Greenville, says last night at
seven o'clock as Sydney Owens was
leaving the hotel he was shot by an
unknown party who was concealed be
hind a tree near the hotel. Suspicion
rests on John Hatton. a young man
who some time ago had a difficulty
with Owens. Hatton is now under
arrest and it is feared Owen's wounds
may ; be fatal. Considerable excite
ment in town.
The Philharmonic Society, at its first
meeting in the new year, last night in '
its club room at the Y. M. 0. A. build
ing, passed resolutions that cannot but
be of great interesj to every lover of
music in North Carolina, but es-
pecially in Charlotte. After a lengthy
discussion in which the matter was
thoroughly canvassed, it was resolved
by an unanimous vote to have a Grand
Alid Summer Musical Festival in Char
lottefthis nine, and to invite every
'nusical sptiety in the State to partici
pate. Before the question had been
brought up, letters of enquiry to several
societibs had been responded to favor
ably that they would gladly come
here and join in a-grand State musical
festival, at. the time named, June,
