House. House. House. House. House. House. Thursday, January, o,- 1S90. 1 GOES FOll DUDLEY. Senator Voorhees, of Indiana, the tall Sycamore of the Wabash" and the staunch idomitable , Democrat, went for IJIock of Five" Dudley, and incidently President. Harrison and Chairman Quay, with gloves off in the Senate yesterday. An associated press telegram says : After some routine morning busi ness Mr. Voorhees called up the reso lution offered yesterday in relation to charges that Air. Chambers, the Uni ted States District Attorney at Ir dianapolts, had interfered in official capacity to prevent the arrest of W. W. Dudley on the charge of feloni ously violating the election laws of Indiana at the last Presidential elec tion, and directing the Attorney Gen eral to report what instructions the Department of Justice hid issued to Chambers on the subject, and to furnish-copies of correspondence, and proceeded to address the Senate. He spoke of the crimeasiiaviug inflicted a terrible stain- on thatj memorable election and i m peached 1. the integrity of the political resnlf flhat followed. The fact of the crime, open, uni versally known and practically con fessed by its perpetrator and his coad jutors, and yet, by constant vigilance in obstructing law, and in denying and preventing justice, the crime had thus far gone unpunished. The bene ficiary of the polluted ballot-box, now in high place, had felt compelled to shield the corrupt instrument of that success from penalties due to such no torious guilt. Mr. Voorhees sent to the clerk's desk had read the notorious "Blocks of Five" letter. This document, em anating officially from the national Republican committee (and never dis avowed), had pointed out, he said, that an ample corruption fund was ready in hand, and gave explicit di rections for its use by the agents se lected for their skill in such rascality. He spoke of Dudley as the immediate personal representative in the Nation al Republican Committee of Benja min Harrison, then candidate for . the Presidency, and Viow President of the United States. He had been put upon that-, committee at the earnest request of Harrison, and betweeU them there were the most confidential and intimate personal relations. They had been political Siamese twins in the State of Indiana When, there- Mannffcctnre of Illrath Cotton Cloth In the South. New York Manufacturers' Review. ' . . An idea prevails at the North and hns secured a very thorough hold on the minds of the New England cotton spinners and weavers, says a writer in The Tradesman that the South can never compete with them in the man ufacture of bleached cotton cloth and its finer grades, for the reason that there is not. sufficient clear water in this-scction of country. .The view of the question is a very erroneous one. Ir. J. B. White a prominent cotton manufacturer, and who, with his brothers, own four mills at Falls Rier, .Mas., has been making a tour of the South, investigating the cotton mills and methods of work. Among other places he visited the mills of the Trion Manufacturing Company, in Chattanooga .County, Ga., which are located on the Chatta nooga, Rome & Columbus Railroad, and which are so prosperously man aged by Mr. D. F. Allgood', the ener getic young president. Mr. White was very much pleased, and said : "I feel satisfied from what I have seen that the South is the proper place for. the manufacture of cotton. ; Every where I have been I have seen an abundance of clear . water. ! The whole Southern country seems fto be blessed with an endless number of bubbling springs, with water as; clear as a crystal. The Southern manu facturers of cotton goods have been mostly making the rougher cloths, probably more from "a lack of knowl ede of making finer goods than any thing else. Then, too, the cosr of the machinery for the manufacture of the commoner cloths is cheaper. But there is no reason why cotton mills for the manufacture of fine bleached cotton cloths should not be established in Chatanooga, or in Ten nessee and other Southern States. ORNAMENTAL PRESENTS.
