The Anti Cigarette Trust Conven
tion of the Farmers' Alliance, after be
ing in session in the Opera House in
Oxford yesterday afternoon, last night
until twelve o clock ana this morning
until noon, has adjourned. r
1 he deliDerations 01 the doqv oc-
curred behind closed doors, and no
inklings of the proceedings have been
made public. Enquiries made by
reporter of The Day resulted, only in
ascertaining that a publication com-
mittee had been appointed, and as
much as the Convention desired to
reveal would be furnished for our col
umns in a few days.
The following resolution was offered
by Mr. T; B. Lindsay, of Rocking
ham -county, N. C., and unanimously
passed ;
Resolved That the' thanks of this
body be and are hereby tendered the
Granville County Alliance and the

mayor and citizens of Oxford for the
kind reception and hospitality shown
us w'ule with them: also that our

thanks be tendered the railroad com
panies for reduced rates given to Ox
ford and return.
The officers of the Convention were

C, president; W. T. Adams, of
Granville, C, vice-president; T.
Y. Allen, ot Mecklenburg. Va., secre-
ary; T. B. Lindsay, of Rockingham,
N. C, assistant secretary. .?
Some of the cigarette manufacturers
composing the .-trust -Avere represented
in Oxford during the sitting of the
body. Messrs. B. N. Duke and G.
W. Watts, of W. Duke, Sons & Co.,
of Durham, and Messrs. John -Pope
and Milton Cayce, of; Allen & Ginter,
of Richmond, were here. They sent
some communications to the Conven
ltion, looking to a compromise it is
understood, but what was accomplish
ed by their manouvering, if anything
has not yet transpired.

the Baptist Female College, furnishes
the Reidsville Review with a report
from which we make the following
extract: 1
On motion of N. B. Broughton
was agreed that subscriptions be taken
from any town or individual to run
for three years from Jan. istj 190, to
be pa:d.in twelve 'equal installments,
the first to be paid April 1st, i860,
and that these subscriptions be taken
in notes without interest'
. It was further agreed that eight
acres of land is the mimmumthat can
be accepted from any town for
lot ation.
This committee met at the request of
the citizens of Oxford ar.d at their

The latest is ah "inventory party"
which was given Tuesday" evening in
Salisbury and is described by the
Charlotte Chronicle correspondent.
Each guest was "supplied with a yard- ,
stick and a long roll of ribbon,, of
which an inventorv was to be taken,
the point being' to see who could
measure the largest number of yards,
in two minutes. After the race the
wearv racers were refreshed by nu- -
merous delicacies, and altogether a
most delightful evening was spent.

Charlotte Chronicle writes: Rev. t
r. M. Joiner, who recently appealed
to the British Minister at Washington,,
claiming to have been outrageously
reated, lived in the western part of
his county from 1879 'until Decern-

The illness of the infant King of
Spain has assumed a most alarming
phase. Last night'he had convulsions
and high fever. He is extremely weak.
Tbe royal'physicians have little if any
hope of his recovery.
"Judge Wm. D. Kelly, of Pennsyl
vania, died at 6:20 p. m., at Washing
ton yesterday. - He was tne oldest
member of the House of Representa
tives in years, and had been elected
to fifteen successive Congresses. Re
cently a cancer on the jaw which he
had had removed several years ago
reappeared and probably shortened
his life, but the immediate cause of
his death was intestinal catarrh of re
cent origin. V
An appalling disaster occurred in
Brooklyn yesterday morning. The
heavy Winds of last night shooj the
new Presbvterian church" at 296 rice
avenue to its foundation, and at 430
this morning. one of the walls fell wiih
a crash on a three-sTory frame build
ing adjoining and brought with it death
and destruction 'Ihe ruined bulldinir
was tenanted by the Mott and Purdy
families. They numbered nine per-
