At the Academy of Sciences in San
Francisco two horned rattlesnakes from
the Mojave assert were exhibited re
cently. The venomous creatures are
yellow, like the s.vnd they live in and
have over each ej fc a scaly horn. They
jaever move straig-ht forward, but with a
sinuous side motion, so that it is impos
sible to' tell in which direction they in
tend to strike. In Palestine and in the
Sahara Desert there is a horned viper
which in many characteristics resembles
the horned rattlesnake of the Mojave.
The use of the horns is not'known.
The n n.f the horns is notknovsrn.
They are not to shield the eyes from the
glare of the sun, because other snakes
in the desert have no horns.

In the ard of Mr. C. M. Busbee,
oLthis city, there is a magnolia tree in
fulLsnd glorious bloom. There are
hundreds of these ich. white, beautiful
blossoms jfi their full and fragrant glo
ry, having bursted their buds to clothe
the tree in a robe of grand beauty long
before its leaves are ready to hide its na

this season is phenomenal; but ever)
